You are very lucky! I personally think a couple of Roystoneas are missing there, near the pool. That would give it the Caribbean feel. I remember you said something about Hyophorbe Verschaeffelti. I don't know if you tried them yet, with the Roystoneas, but I think they will do it very good. The coast from Almería to Málaga has lots of both species, specially Roystoneas. Even in my area I know some good looking specimens of both palms.

Not a bad idea about the roystoneas near the pool, i only have one in my garden, next to my Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii, near a south facing wall, it's the only place I feel they are safe in winter... but maybe near the water, palms like that would get a couple of degrees protection now?? 1

Jan Jo 361 Report post Posted September 9, 2018 Just wanted to share a couple more pics of seedlings which have lingered for a couple of years in the ground since I planted them, and have finally decided (at the same time) to take off.... This mule palm only had strap leaves at the beginning of the summer.... And, quite close to it, the Caryota maxima himalaya has decided to finally start growing, too... Hope you like them, J 2

Jan Jo 361 Report post Posted November 11, 2018 (edited) Hey, Just wanted to post a couple of pics of two of my Bismarck palms, to compare the growth from a year and a half ago when I last showed pics of them... The first one seems to have grown a little... Then... (Feb 17) And now (Nov 18) (from a different angle)... But look at this other one... Then (Feb 17).. And now (Nov 18)... (Same from a slightly different angle)... That's crazy, eh? I think they both get roughly the same amount of sun, irrigation, occasional fertilizer... but what a difference... the second palm has better soil (more chalk in the area of the first palm), that's all I can think of... I sometimes wish I'd brought in more good soil to my garden before planting all my palms, I never realised it would make such a difference... Jan Jo 361 Report post Posted August 31, 2019 Hi! Just wanted to share a couple more pics: I've decided to try to make the most of my "rock pool" microclimate to try out some of the zone pushers in my collection, I even dared to buy a Veitchia Joannis, though I'm keeping them in pots for now, see how they fare this winter... I like the look of the pots round the pool anyway... hope you like them The pool... Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, growing relatively fast, seems to like the spot (this one I will bring under cover on the coldest nights for sure).. and behind it my showcase Veitchia Joannis. I like this palm a lot! From this view you can see them all, albeit some not very clearly... dypsis lutescens (in ground), cocos nucifera I've had a couple of years (must winter inside though), ptychosperma sp., wodyetia bifurcata (ok outside in winter), and the aforementioned Veitchia and Hyophorbe... Cheers, J 2
Jan Jo 361 Report post Posted August 31, 2019 This photo of my Butiagrus and Caryota Maxima behind I took and shared with you April last year (2018), they had looked more or less like that for 3 years... Now, I can't figure out how to get them in the frame... And the Caryota from another angle...! The Beccariophoenix Alfredii have gone nuts too... I guess you should never give up on slow starting seedlings! 4
