Hey!

Couple of pics of the latest addition to my garden, not a palm this time but a small rock pool... great place to stare at the palms from ;)

Hope you like them,

Completely amazing! :yay:

wow, what a pleasure to take a bath there surrounded by that tropical garden. You are very lucky!

I personally think a couple of Roystoneas are missing there, near the pool. That would give it the Caribbean feel. ^_^

I remember you said something about Hyophorbe Verschaeffelti. I don't know if you tried them yet, with the Roystoneas, but I think they will do it very good. The coast from Almería to Málaga has lots of both species, specially Roystoneas. Even in my area I know some good looking specimens of both palms.

Love the use of stone and water!  Definitely a lush, green escape from day to day monotony.

Thanks! Sorry about the slow reply, been off palmtalk for a while...

Not a bad idea about the roystoneas near the pool, i only have one in my garden, next to my Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii, near a south facing wall, it's the only place I feel they are safe in winter...

but maybe near the water, palms like that would get a couple of degrees protection now??

Just wanted to share a couple more pics of seedlings which have lingered for a couple of years in the ground since I planted them, and have finally decided (at the same time) to take off....

This mule palm only had strap leaves at the beginning of the summer....

And, quite close to it, the Caryota maxima himalaya has decided to finally start growing, too...

Hey,

Just wanted to post a couple of pics of two of my Bismarck palms, to compare the growth from a year and a half ago when I last showed pics of them...

The first one seems to have grown a little...

Then... (Feb 17)

20170226_171424.thumb.jpg.649d48768fdb3a

And now (Nov 18) (from a different angle)...20181111_125923-1032x774.thumb.jpg.b8f22

But look at this other one...

Then (Feb 17)..

20170226_170833.thumb.jpg.7020ce4e69f97d

And now (Nov 18)...

20181111_125720-1032x774.thumb.jpg.91132

(Same from a slightly different angle)...

20181111_125730-1032x774.thumb.jpg.592b0

That's crazy, eh?

I think they both get roughly the same amount of sun, irrigation, occasional fertilizer... but what a difference... the second palm has better soil (more chalk in the area of the first palm), that's all I can think of...

I sometimes wish I'd brought in more good soil to my garden before planting all my palms, I never realised it would make such a difference...

Hi!

Now winter is finally over I thought I'd post a few pics of my garden... wasn't a particularly cold winter, but we had some very intense dry winds last month :(

Hi! Just wanted to share a couple more pics: I've decided to try to make the most of my "rock pool" microclimate to try out some of the zone pushers in my collection, I even dared to buy a Veitchia Joannis, though I'm keeping them in pots for now, see how they fare this winter... I like the look of the pots round the pool anyway... hope you like them ;)

The pool...

20190831_171815-1032x774.thumb.jpg.cc11e26d4525693345e7e38a0fdbecd8.jpg

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, growing relatively fast, seems to like the spot (this one I will bring under cover on the coldest nights for sure).. and behind it my showcase Veitchia Joannis. I like this palm a lot!

20190831_171823-774x1032.thumb.jpg.314bf1ed682038b734fee1d64c73a62d.jpg

From this view you can see them all, albeit some not very clearly... dypsis lutescens (in ground), cocos nucifera I've had a couple of years (must winter inside though), ptychosperma sp., wodyetia bifurcata (ok outside in winter), and the aforementioned Veitchia and Hyophorbe...20190831_171912-1032x774.thumb.jpg.2b0389b556bf0ab7749635ade5a62154.jpg

This photo of my Butiagrus and Caryota Maxima behind I took and shared with you April last year (2018), they had looked more or less like that for 3 years...20180415_114150-774x1032.thumb.jpg.ad93e43c4c13f7f28ec48c6820dc9534.jpg.ded652eea3b180531663e9ae6197d09b.jpg

Now, I can't figure out how to get them in the frame...

Beautiful Garden! Id have to agree with you too that for the climate we have here the garden centres all sell the same 4/5 types of palms and thats your lot! Does make it exciting when you find that one palm no one else has though. im trying to create my own tropical paradise close to Alicante, i have plenty of photos on Instagram if you are interested in seeing them (tropicalgardenspain) Its great to see other people in Spain with the same interests and goals. Looking forward to seeing future pictures... and spring

Jan Jo,

Love your garden!  I am also growing Sabal guatemalensis (almost 8 years from seed).  How old is yours?  I assume you also grew from seed.  The only other members that I know of that are growing this palm are @PalmatierMeg and @Briank

Hi Jamie!

Thanks! Sorry for the slow reply, just saw this... I looked up your Instagram profile but since I don't have one I couldn't open the posts, but what I could see looks incredible! Wow! (Where do you buy your palms in Spain? Looks like you were ordering from Paul Witte?)

Great work! I'll have to set up an Instagram account!

Thanks Jon!

Actually I bought it already a decent size from a vendor/grower in Alicante, so not sure about the age. He seemed very confident it was that species (I think he'd collected the seed)... it's growing a bit slowly, maybe it'll pick up...

Do you have pics of yours on here?

Hi Jan Jo

Here's a pic of mine.  It's a slow grower for me also but growing much faster in the ground.  8 years from seed.  From 2018:

The tiny Jubaeopsis seedling you can see in the first pic (now totally ecclipsed by the Livistona Nitida which was also planted small, shortly after the first photo) has grown a little bit too...
