Hello all, I am new to the forum.  Thus looks like a very educational forum.  I would like to know if anyone can help identify what is on these small fan palm seedlings that I sprouted in a jar, and keep in sand that i bought from my florist ?  It looks like it can be from the palm itself, or some really small pest living on the tree.  They are in sand, so I do not know how any critters could have gotten on the palms.  Can anyone help ?  Thanks !

Super hard to tell in the photos.  I am guessing aphids or spider mites.  But that is a guess.

I don't know how they got on my plants from sand, I though sand was a clean planting medium.  What have you all done to help prevent or rid your palms of these pests, that were safe for people and the plants ?

Your house isn't hermetically sealed. There are crawlers everywhere, and once they find a source of food, the reproduction is rapid.

It looks like a Washingonia? It's a tough plant, but you should get rid of the critters. For spidermites you can try spraying neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Is you don't have Neem oil or insecticidal soap, just get a paper towel soaked with soapy water.  Dish soap is fine.  Wring out the paper towel and gently wipe down the leaves.

Tom!

Welcome!

Your palm looks like a baby Washingtonia, and it looks okay to me.

A "washie" is a fan palm, with those tall featherdusters you see all over in Los Angeles and California generally.

If you feel you have to do something, maybe a bit of neem oil, but I honestly can't see anything wrong with your bitty but strong-looking baby.

Hard to tell without seeing in person but I am pretty sure those specks are just dust or the beginnings of those hairy fibers Washies have.

Unless you have 100% visual confirmation (you see legs, body parts or movement) I would hold off on the oils and soaps.
