If you had to choose only ONE palm to plant in your garden what would it be?

A Washingtonia.  Like the cockroach, no matter what happens they will always be here,

They are cockroaches here too. I saw one growing in a sidewalk crack that is now 20' tall

A very difficult question, but I would select one of the Dypsis clumping varieties.  I wouldn't be limited to just "one" plant.  The easiest and fastest growing in my gardens has been Dypsis pembana, stretching in more shade, and more compact in full sun.  When we left our Carlsbad garden, my wife was very clear that the one palm she wanted to replicate in the new garden was the Caryota gigas, but she has had to settle for a Caryota no instead, my hope that it will be a bit smaller.  So D pembana for me, and C gigas for my wife.

I would choose for sure Dictyosperma Album and more specific var. Conjugatum.

One of my favorites

I choose Butia odorata. It's graceful silver, arching fronds that flutter in the wind and it's cold hardiness, along with variability make it my favorite species. Each one has its own "personality".

Cyrtostachys renda. They do well in both my gardens. They do well in both shade and full sun.I cannot think of a more spectacular palm!

These two are growing at the beach.

Lipsticks are one of my favorites, if we could only grow it outside and not have to worry!

Josh,

Those Clinostigmas had been in the ground for about 12 years, typically from 5G pots.

Mine would have to be Dypsis. carlsmithii. Beautiful color on crown, when old leaf comes off. and a big fat "stumpy" trunk. Very fast for me here. My wife asked which was my

favorite palm in the garden the other night, and I had to say it,

aloha

Could be one of my choices. I have a big one growing at the nursery.

I figure that if I can only grow one palm, this hobby isn't worth it.

So I will pick up a washy from the asphalt crack and stick it somewhere. At least I can sleep at night. :mrlooney:

Cocos nucifera - my absolute favorite (which I can grow here), but very closely followed by

Clinostigma samoense - which I am giving a try since last march...(I am just concerned about what the typhoons

will do to them when they got too tall to be protected by the surrounding wall.)

Beccariophoenix alfredii. I will try to grow as many as I can. But If I could grow Satakentias, it would be my first choice.
