Hi all, can someone ID this palm seed for me? Collected in a guy's spice garden in Kerala, India.

It's big! It's the one in the middle, the other seed is areca catechu and it's about twice the size of that. I've also put a £2 coin next to it for scale - it's 28.4mm diameter.

All I could see of the palm is that it's pinnate, smooth trunk, tall. The embryo has always been brown, but there's three roots(?) coming from the bottom (can just see in pic 2)

Thanks in advance.

Pal, unfortunately this one died from mold :(

I have another one and I am not sure what to do to prevent that ?

I think the reason is that it dose not  have shell and the flesh is exposed ?

Got twins from one of my Butia Odorata seeds. They both still only have a single leaf but one is over 17 inches tall.

Not grown them before. Is it normal for them to get that tall?

Those Butia look a little stretched, because the light levels are low, but that's not out of the ordinary. Most of the ones around here that germinate under the mother tree in full sun are more compact but still about 10-12in. Just slowly transition them to a higher light environment.

Stretched leaves are normal for Butias grown at shady sites; they like full sun even as seedlings. Here a seedling of mine (Nov. 1972), also grown indoors on a window sill, showing the tip of its 5th leaf:

All the Sabal palm seeds I started, have been very good germinators with 90% plus rates. Yours look great too!

As long as the tip of the leaves doesn’t get brown or wilt I think it is okay. Water only with soft (rain) water but don’t leave any water in the saucer.

Your Lyto seedlings look really very fine and their growth is not slow, but rather good. You can compare it to my seedlings as they were looking when ca. 3, 4, and 5 months old (germination from 2014-02-14 to 2014-03-21). Your seedlings germinated after Xmas and are now 4+ months old and are looking like mine from end of June 2014:

That's comforting Pal :) , they only thing is that I dont use rain water , and had to use Sydney water mostly ( I leave one night so if there is any chlorine to be dispersed ) ...

I am thinking of installing rain water tank in near future though ...

BTW, How about give them liquid fertilizer and seaweed from now ? is it suggested or is too soon?

Lytos don’t like hard water, so if Sydney’s water is not salty or hard it should be okay. I think it is still a bit too early for fertilizer, but when you use it use it more diluted and not so often. Later when the palms get bigger you may use it as recommended.

"A Water “hardness” is mostly a measure of the Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) concentration in.
milligrams per litre. Below 60 mg/L water is considered soft and above that level it is considered hard.

For Sydney's water the average reading is around 57 mg/L so the water is considered soft. "

Per Sydney water website.

@Pal Meir, I just noticed today that a part of the root came out of Pot's bottom , should I do anything? this is the biggest pot I have and I place the seed on top so root could have more media and soil to grow .

I don’t remember how it was with my Cocos, but it depends also on the environmental conditions: the more sun, the earlier pinnate, I think.

For LWs it is normal that in most cases the 1st or 2nd leaf will be pinnate:

Looking very happy! :greenthumb: Don’t forget watering! And when it’s getting warmer coconuts love even wet feet. My coconut was always in a deep saucer with ca. 10 cm water, but I was using a pure mineral soil mix (granite grus) which didn’t get soggy or mouldy.
