I'd locate it in full sun for best growth. Very light shade (an opening in a pine grove, for example) when young would be OK as well. Too much shade will result in spindly growth. It won't result in any measurable difference in bark color.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm wondering how far away from any structure I would plant mine? I'm out side of Houston, so the ground should be better to support it than Florida's.
