I'm also happy you hooked me up with a smaller version of one of the beautiful Dypsis aff.tokoravina? I am curious if it's the same mystery palm Bill Austin recently posted... I can hope. :)

20170922_114919.thumb.jpg.ba697112ea7d74

Then there is this giant Hedyscepe you hooked me up with in a 15 gal. I am scoping a spot in the back yard to plant it and it will join pyriformis and klotzschiana as the only palms I have planted duplicates of!

THANKS again Josh! Mahalo! Rum and coke in the future!

It only took me 3 years to finally get around to planting these super overgrown (for California standards) Syagrus botryophora.  I had these in my Carlsbad garden in my back yard in these HUGE heavy as heck 40 gal clay pots. They grew to tall and when it got windy they keep falling over so I decided it was now time to get them in the ground and planted at my "Fair View"  garden.

they are easily 17' tall

I thought it would be fun to start a thread on my up and coming garden in Vista California. I wasn't planning on doing a thread but I got pressured into by a few PSSC members.. you know who you are...lol :mrlooney:

My wife and I bought and investment property almost 3 years ago in Vista California. My wife doesn't understand the palm disease like most of my friends so I needed a place to plant a garden where I can grow bigger stuff. I've been officially working in the garden for about 6 months. It's been a very slow project but its finally starting to pay off. I recently started planting palms on the south facing slope in a good micro climate. I've wanted to do this for some time now and I have finally made it a reality. The garden is located on 3 acres and was covered in very old stressed out Avocado trees that were neglected by the former property owner. It took several months-1 year to cut and remove all the trees and stumps. A total labor of love for sure. Now that I have all those avo's cut down the garden is a blank canvas ready to be created. The soil is dreamy.....Its has a 2 foot clay silt cap followed by pure DG and is easy to dig with a sharp shovel. My end goal is to just create a tropical oasis that will bring me joy and have a cool place to enjoy a Mai Tai. :)

I recently trenched and now have all the hard pie for the irrigation laid in place (that took much longer than planned) with the help of a very good palm buddy.

post-7434-0-90497700-1441148335_thumb.jp (BEFORE) Digging a pretty big hole for a palm I'm going to have craned in

post-7434-0-39859300-1441148483_thumb.jp (AFTER) Jubaeopsis Caffra has successfully been craned in place

MANY MORE PICTURES TO COME....

I plan on updating this thread every so often with some pictures of recently planted palms, rare trees, ETC

Please enjoy and thanks for looking :greenthumb:

Josh,

That is very good news!

May be one day I will have to dig one of my own four B.alfredii and move to another spot - good to know that they can make it!

best regards

Lars

just get a big root ball. Mine suffered since i cut so many roots off and I moved it on a very hot day which didn't help any.

I was surprised how root sensitive this species is.

Your Vista place looks amazing, Josh.  I must visit if I ever get myself over to California! You must have the best palm collection (so many species all in one place) in the San Diego area.  Bravo!

just planted a few nice bentinckia condapanna today in the main garden area. It's been a long time since I have planted any palms and posted pictures. I hope these will grow up to be really nice specimens some day soon?

also put this long awaited 5 gallon basselinia humboldtiana in the ground. I have been patiently waiting for canopy to develop before I plopped her in the ground. It will be growing in between a clump of Dypsis ambositrae and a huge flowering ravenala madagascariensis var. monticola

Your a hard working guy. I know.

By drought tolerant, do you mean, among other things, amending your soil and adding a bit of clay or other water retaining medium?
