Up and coming garden in Vista California / blank canvanas

Thanks Ante, I love the boulder look so much I'm actually having a 60 ton crane come in and relocate some 2-6,000 ib boulders is strategic places in the garden. There is something magical about big rocks in the garden

Josh it is looking incredible. Have you started to think about some of the under canopy palms and cycads and other plants? A water feature would be wonderful and add some humidity.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

Hi Scott, I was thinking a water feature would be cool but since this is just a secondary garden of mine and not my primary garden it would be hard to keep up.

Cycads are a definite in the near future..

I always say go big or go home..

Great project. Well done. And amazing collection of palms! This is what we are missing here at home. To find other palms than the usual ones at the nurseries. The ravenea madsgascariensis Var. Monticola is very beautiful!

Just finished planting and watering in a pretty good sized specimen saygrus coronata today. I love how stiff and plumose the leaves are on this species. This beast was super heavy and I needed a crane to drop it in the crater like hole we dug.

I'm planning on putting more syagrus species in this next couple of weeks.

Please enjoy the pictures:)

Hey gang, I'm back at it again. Just planted a nice fat and healthy livistona australis. The crane gauge measured this box weighing in at 2200 lbs. The only bad thing about australis is the armor on the petioles. I cant wait for it to grow up a few more feet so I wont keep snagging my hat on the thorns. hahaha!

please enjoy the pics

Hey gang, I just planted a very cool hybrid today. Its a Jubea X Queen. I bought it 2 years ago when it was a 2 leaf seedling. This hybrid seems to be growing very fast and should be a home run palm in 4-5 years. Is anyone else growing this hybrid??

yes they are, I bought them as tiny liners for a million bucks each when he had them in the summer of 2014.

I planted out 2 today and I'm going to shift the 3rd one into a 15 gal and sit on it for a while.

any pictures of the reverse cross?

WOW ! Josh

Most of them I bought from various nurseries and a few private collectors.

It's real awesome to get such a huge jump and instant gratification with palms that are already large.

I'm now going to focus my attention on 25, 20, 15 and 5 gals sized plants.

Hows your amazing Lepidorrhachis mooreana doing? any updated pic's?

Cheers

I was jet-lagged yesterday, Josh - mine is also JxS (Jubaea mother.)

Here's a pic - one year in ground from strap leaf seedling, and becoming my fastest growing palm (overtaking my B. paraguayensis x PJc).

Any brahea fans out there??? if so chime

Just planted a few days ago this very blue/silver brahea clara in a 30" box. I use to not like this genus now I absolutely adore them.

Now that I have plenty of room to plant larger palms I'm really going to focus on some of the cooler palmate palms in the garden.

is anyone else growing this species? If so whats your favorite one? if you have any picture please them.

enjoy the pic's below:)

I think yours will speed way up in the ground.  Mine only went in last April as a strap leaf...really, really fast.

Hey gang,I wanted to show you my cute little ancient coccothrinax borhidiana. I'm guessing 1 leaf per year?? CRAZY slow for California standards. It has about 8" of trunk and is holding about 12 leaves.

This was planted a couple weeks ago in the Vista garden. This palm is a very good grower for me and loves to be in full hot blazing all day sun.

enjoy the pictures :)

Your hole digging reminds me of Kris from Indian (squares & rectangles).

Josh is probably working at night. If he tries to stick a square rootball into a round hole, it won't fit, so he knows it's a wrong place for it. See, it's all planned out.

Here is a very nice specimen sized gaussia princeps with at least 5 rings of solid trunk I planted out 2 months ago. So far since I have planted it has had 2 leaves open up. This palm seems to be a fairly fast grower?

Enjoy the pictures :)

Just getting things going again. Here is an unusual cross for California that I just planted out the other day.

copernicia prunifera X copernicia Alba

Although a small 15 gal  plant you can defiantly seed both parents in it.

please enjoy the pictures

Cheers!

Does anyone have any problems with their dypsis decipiens??  I've killed 6  really big 25 gal's in the last 2 years. They are very fussy and root sensitive and hate to be over watered. your in put would be greatly appreciated :greenthumb::greenthumb:

I just planted out two 25 gals today and I hope I don't have any more problems in the future.
