Dypsis mananjarensis in Orlando,FL-Leu Gardens

Eric in Orlando

Recommended Posts

This Dypsis mananjarensis was planted in July 2010 (came from Floribunda). It was from a 1 gal. pot. Today the tips of the leaves reach about 6ft. The markings on the petioles are striking.

Here is a younger specimen growing across the sidewalk. It was planted Aug. 2012.

Eric, is it in a place with lots of organic matter and some overhead canopy?

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

Yes, they are in broken shade so get some sun but mostly bright filtered light. There are 3 planted out here.

The first one grows under a big Sausage Tree. It sheds a lot so the soil is very rich under it from the decomposed leaf litter and flowers. The other 2 are in more typical sandy soil (for this area) but have some organic matter and are mulched with pine needles.

I've had great success with these in the ground. My only warning is don't plant them with lots of shade. They thrive in mostly all day sun.

The 2 in the pics are growing well so far. A thrid one that was growing in full shade was growing very slow. The tree that was shading it come down a couple years ago. Now this palm gets mostly sun and is growing better.

  • 3 years later...

I stopped by the gardens yesterday on my way to the airport.

Here are updated photos of the Mealy's.

I stumbled across three different specimens.

Not so excited PRA-ing daughter for scale.
