Materials Need For Germination..

Kris

Recommended Posts

Dear folks  :)

i have illustrated the general method that i follow to seeds

germination..

First requisite is freshly picked palm seeds from your

neighbour's garden, better still from your friends garden  :D

socked it well for 3 days, but keep changing the water daily

and the water should not be chill.if you are in cold countries

then you will need a thermo flask to maintain a luke warm

water to assist in waking up those seeds from dormancy_

and on the final day treat the seeds with mild liquid bleech

solution for 30 minutes, after which allow the seeds to air dry before putting it in to the baggie bag containing slightly moist damp-off,peat moss or coco-peat.

while is used just Coco dust from the local coir unit.

and it work well for me.and check the baggie bag for air

leaks.that is bulge the baggie pouch with air.and lock it

and gently press to see if air is escaping out or if you have time them fill this baggie bag with air over night.and next morning check if the bag is totally flat.in that case avoide such a bag..

Now lets go to visuals_

Now lets see the socking of coir dust, but do not allow it to

sock for too long.just 5 to 10 minutes will do.and then squeeze out excess water by hand squeezing method.

and fill the baggie bag which is already tested for air leaks_

While squeezing the coil if you find husk or coir fibre, remove it

from using it in the baggie bag_

Put the seeds now into the baggie bag containing mild moist

coir dust.and to poke the medium use that red rynold pen,

if the medium is treated with harsh fungicide.i usually not use

any chemicals.it still works fine for me.

and place the seeds inside the bag and the depth is usually

proprotional to its seed size.and cover the seed using that

pen.and seel the baggie bag and leave it in a warm room

that is dark.here to my knowledge darkness helps in seeds

germination.since iam from a hot country i do not use external

heating beds or apparatus !

for people leaving in cold countries will need heating beds,

near a heater, rear of refrigriators.but refrain placing these

pouches on top of t.v or comp monitors.

Guys do not cramp the baggie bags with excess seeds.since

its not that expensive to use new pouches.so in case one of the medium is infected with fungas or root rot.the damage will

be minimal.and this method here taken for discussion is for

people who import seeds in small quantities only.who wants to do it in bulk.i would suggest contact our Jeff, clayton,Kami

palms & William.

my method is slow & steady !

here are the materials that i use_the one in this picture is the liquid bleech, see the alphabets have disappeared due

to constant spilling of that liquid.

here you can see 2 plastic containers & a tea filter.

the containers is used to sock the seeds for 3 days or so,

this depends how dry or how hard the seed coat is.but water

should be changed daily_do not forget this !

and the filter is used to wash the small seeds in the bathroom

sink.just being caution not to loose a single seed down the drain  :D

these are the flask, you can try warm stratification or cold stratification of the desired seeds, defends on your geographical location...

one most vital material that i missed out is a decent note book

and a felt pen that writes on a CD disc or which can write on

porceline_

see to it that this book is never touched by anyone.since it is

here you note the date, seeds name, medium used, and your

unique method adopted for that given Species of seeds.

and make it a point to also write the above info on that baggie

bag in which you have put the seeds in.

and wait for 3 weeks to 2 months for normal seeds to germinate.but from species to species this changes.so

never throw your non-germinated seeds.leave it there as it is.

and if the baggie bag is filled with roots and sprouts then

never ever pull it out.but instead just cut open the bag

and start transplanting those young ones_

but remember to put holes in the plastic bottles bottom

for the water to drain out freely !

some of the bismarkia germinated seeds were put in old

terracota pots, that will be broken when the roots fill in full..

i even use cheap industrial barrels of varying sizes, that are

sold for a song !they usually bring in soap oils from the

neighbouring state to the soap factories...

even here the drain holes is a must.please check that it works okay !

Kris,

Awesome ! A perfect lesson in germination. Jeff is right - you should be teaching at MCC or Loyola.

Thanks for doing this.

Thanks Joseph  :)

actually i did graduate in fine arts from Loyola_Nungambakkam

and my younger brother from Madras Christian Collegue_

tambram  :)

i suppose that is the legacy  :D

but i must praise you for your generocity and good will of giving seeds to New IPS memebers as incentive gifts_oowing

them to experiment with palm seeds germination.

this is what i call a praise worhty effort...

blessed are those who love their brotherin !

Dear William & Dear Logo  :)

thanks for those encouraging comments, but i feel a bit

embarassed, since iam a novice and that above instruction

given might need some tweaking or fine tuning.i hope the

pro's in this field will add their knowledge in case if some

things are still missing in it.

i personally feel that knowledge in us should be of some use to others.since i come from a community where they burn the dead in fire.and all that is left will be ashes.it would include onces braind and also its contents...totally

erased for ever !

And also feel free to correct me if there are errors ! i hope

even our moderator will help us in making corrections..

Thanks & Love,

Well done Kris,

Your step by step guide is spot on.36_1_11.gif

The only things I do different is to use boiling hot water with the Coir just to make sure its sterile and I handle it using disposable gloves (once its cooled), making sure theres absolutely no chance of a bacteria transfer.

I don't use fungicides at all.

I do clean every thing with bleach including germination boxes but never the seeds.

A note on pre-soaking seeds-

If the seeds came from a rain forest type environment they will generally have a very thin outer covering and pre-soaking these will generally lead to rot.

If the seeds come from a more arid type environment with a harder - woody outer covering ( like Syagrus for example) pre-soaking these types would defiantly be beneficial . Cracking the outer shell also speeds things up .

I received some Bactris seeds from a very good friend in August of 2005.

These seeds had a hard woody outer covering and had been on heat from the day they arrived. Up until a couple of weeks ago they hadn't moved at all so I decided to investigate a bit further. I first thought the seeds had gone off as they hadn't germinated in all that time. I cracked the outer shell open to find a healthy seed in side. Thinking I had nothing to loose, I cracked the rest of the seeds and re-planted in fresh Coir. A week later 75% had germinated.

  Coincidence or not ...........4_12_12.gif
