We have been trying to find a sponsor for that ad slot for years, with no success. So we decided to use Google ads in an attempt to help with the expenses necessary to improve the web site.

I'm seeing the promotion of Asian women as well under the list of birthdays. Very tacky to say the least. Also noticing pet advertisements on the site. Can't wait for the viagra ones. I hate using Google search for this very reason.

So if I have to click on one of Google's ads, I'm willing to bet then they have my IP address and follow me, right? I really come here for the palm info and not to participate in Google's advertising info collection scheme. Kind of bet by putting up ads that might be more distasteful to some they expect to generate more clicks to those Xs too. I'm really sorry PT has decided to go this route. Guess our 3-year membership renewal to IPS didn't help. Feel strongly enough about this to express my opinion on it.

Pretty much every major website you go to has Google Ad Sense running.

As far as the Ads I know there is an Ad Sense op-out area that I do not think was used when we set this up. This will fix the issue with the type of ad's you deem "distasteful". So that should be an easy fix.

As I have no real need for an asian wife, more pets or viagra, I ignore the silly things. If it raises much needed revenue then go for it. It's like watching tv, I may be watching something educational but an ad break doesnt make me want to buy a nutri-bullet or a home gym. Ads are part of life in the 21st century

Thanks Peachy. I actually have become like you and my mind has tuned out all ads.

The ads like referenced have been blocked now so sorry if someone was looking for a wife or Viagra. :)

Thanks. Noticed the difference today. Interesting to know that websites have some input into what kinds of ads will run. Out of curiosity do websites earn more for sex-related ads?

Kind of feel like I need to explain why I said something. I don't consider myself a prude or religious by any means, but for a site trying to reach people everywhere I think PT shouldn't be promoting things like...what... "dating" women, escort service, or what should we call their business?...

As a woman using the internet you have no idea how many ads showing female breast or butt shots on non-sex sites you visit that are literally thrown in your face every days all day long. Suppose for guys you don't give it a second thought. Wonder if you'd end up feeling differently about this kind of advertising if instead they were male crotch and butt shots. Viewing such an ad in a paper newspaper it would be easier to not notice due to the larger print area. However on a cell phone, tablet or computer screen they are literally smack in your face.

In general think I'm pretty good at ignoring and not commenting in general on this stuff, but to start to see this on a palm site I'm a member of, it really does bother me. OK said my piece about it. Thanks for tailoring more suitable advertising to the site.

Been trying to use DuckDuckGo actually. Strange name and not probably the best application name. Like it's minimal look and actually find the search results are more applicable to what I am looking for without going through pages of results of sites trying to sell me something instead of taking me to the company that produces the product. Just updated one of my Apple products to the latest IOS version and DDG is offered as a Safari Default. Otherwise I have to remember to go to their website for a search. I have one program on my iPad that I use all the time that doesn't play well with later IOS yet so haven't updated that device yet. Miss having the default choice on that decice. As I understand it some of the other non-google browsers also offer DDG as a default choice.

In general I have my internet use set to Private browsing and I limit my cookies. No guarantee the sites will not use the tracking info, just like getting on the Do Not Call registery will stop all advertising phone calls, but those annoying calls have been reduced significantly.

Well not to get into the whole male verses female psyche, but there is a reason why those ads are served and they are of course for males and while other ads are targeted for women and appear differently .To answer your question, yes, those type ads bring in a lot more revenue. Not because we get more for serving them but because men actually click through to see what the ad was about. We are credited with the click.

Ads I am seeing now are actually appropriate and fairly attractive -- teak and bamboo patio furniture and pergolas, a small deck-top hot tub/spa for two, some attractive dresses and shoes, and "flights to Maui". (No T&A stuff at all.) It's funny to see the things I've searched for appear in the ads, but that is true with every web site. My brain mostly tunes them out, but these are good enough that I might actually click on them.

There are some changes in progress for some of the various permissions allowed for IPS Members as opposed to non-IPS Members. The number of PM messages allowed per day and stored is one of them. As a non-IPS Member, there will now be a daily limit as to the number of PMs allowed. There are also some other changes you will want to know about. This should all be finalized and posted later today.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

:winkie:

At least it is not slowing the site down like other ad types... at least for me it is not!

Hmmm...which would lead to the obvious question - why do I see ads for baby clothes and blinds? :bemused::lol2:
