Psyched about new hybrids

Ben in Norcal

Recommended Posts

As I think some of you know, I'm turning into a bit of a hybrid "aficionado" - with a whole bunch of different goodies in ground, Patric Schafer and otherwise. Some that I can think of off the top of my head:

2 BxS in ground, 4 in pots

2 B. Yatay x S in ground

Butia capitata/odorata x PJC in ground

Butia paraguayensis x PJC in ground

JxS in ground

2 BxJ in ground

JxB in ground

Dypsis Lepto x Decaryi in ground

7 Syagrus schizophylla x romanzoffiana in ground

I'm probably forgetting some. 2xBrahea clara, if you subscribe to that being a hybrid, as well.

Anyway, I am super psyched about some of my new hybrids! Left to right, we have Syagrus x Lytocaryum, 2x Queen Bu Ju seedlings, and finally on the far right - Butia x Lytocaryum. I am what my shirt says.

What does everyone reckon to hardiness of these? I don't know there are many of these around, so your guess is as good as mine. I have to figure out where to plant these guys/how much sun I think they can take, as well. Hmmm...

Psyched and had to share!

I'm not sure about the hardiness of those but I've always been interested in Syagrus x Lytocaryum. I read that they can be crossed but never found much more information than that. Either way I think you scored big time! I hope to one day be that lucky! Like your shirt says haha.

Awesome collection! And bravo on the lytocaryum hybrids. I've never seen one before and these must be ultra rare. Did you get these from Patric also?

Thanks everyone. These are all Patric Schafer plants. He was in town working on an inflorescence at a local stand of trees, so I had him bring these in for me. I was initially just looking for the QuBuJu that Jim Denz has - but when I heard he had both Lytocaryum crosses, I acted quickly!

Ben, those new hybrids are a riot! You will soon be the king of northern hybrids. I'm always looking for interesting hybrids too but space in Murphy garden is decidedly limited now. Looks like you're filling in yours nicely. That garden of yours is going to be a show stopper in a few years!

Hi ben. Those new hybrids look awesome. As does the rest of your garden. Please post some more photos. Especially some of the Bx Lytocaryum as it grows.

Some reason the photos on this thread are not showing - is is just me?

Ben how are these palms doing now? Do you have an updated photo?

I have acquired BxLyto as well so it will be interesting to see how these develop. Faster for you I expect than me in cool damp UK!

Thanks.

Just getting home here after a week of travels.  I am not sure why the links appear broken here.  Grrrr...

Hard to get pics in the very wet jungle right now. Here’s the Butia x Lytocaryum, trowel for scale.

And the Syagrus (Queen) x Lytocaryum. Both have gone vertical faster than I expected.

Mine looks like a smaller version of that. My 8F freeze in Jan 2018 set me back. I wrapped the base with a moving blanket, but the fronds got smoked.

What is the palm in the back at 11'oc with the dark boots? Looks like it's going to be a phaty next to the driveway....

Jubaea x Syagrus.  Gonna be a monster - but not that close to the driveway.  Good 6 feet off it which I hope is adequate!

That’s what I thought. Man you’re packed in there. Look at everything you have around it. Cool hybrids within feet. Stunning...
