Howdyall

I've been getting many queries about this, and they're back:

FREE CHAMADOREA RADICALIS SEED shipped to you

Shoot me a PM

please put "Free Chamadorea radicalis seed" in the message part. Makes it easier for my feeble mind to keep up with what I know will be big demand.

I'll drop them in an envelope and send 'em to you.

WORLD-[EXPLETIVE] WIDE. 'Murka, Croatia, India, England, where ever.

They're not from my garden, but another PSSC member who donated TONS of seed.

Mostly "bush" type with some "tree" type. Not segregated. But, tree type is 2 M tall, maybe 3 at most even for your apartment

So far I've gotten about ten requests.

I'll wait a week or so, then send them all out at once.

There's still more if you want some.

Seeds mailed today.

Looks like I'm a little short.

Have to ask the Seed Fairy for another fix.

I'm sure i'll get it.

There will be other species, too, in separate posts.

Okay,

Thought I'd share some details about all this.

I got a lot of requests, 28 in all.

I ran out of seed, for now but will get more. My connection has a lot more.

Here's my desk of doom.

Hi,

I sent you a PM or two previous to this posting about something else - and then I responded to this offering the same day you offered them. Neither time did I get a response - I see that MA is not on your list of destinations, so I wonder if you are not getting my PM's?

Apparently my postal service sucks because I just got the seeds yesterday.

Thanks a ton! They're already clean and in a bag of moss. I can't wait to see what sprouts!

Thanks again, Dave!

How long do these usually take to germinate? Anybody had any luck yet?

Good question, which we're hoping our recipients may help to answer.

Seeds that I had took a month or so. But don't take that as gospel, given my bad husbandry.

I have them on bottom heat and check regularly. No signs of germination yet...

Anybody else?

How long, Kai? I germinate mine without the benefit of bottom heat and it take several months in some case to get them to sprout....I am not certain that bottom heat is beneficial to this species,...others will know more.

I got them May 6th in the mail. So a few days short of a month they're in there.

So maybe it's better to put them ambient?

Chamaedoreas often aren't the quickest germinators....leave the heat, I guess. Let's hope that some else chimes in....

My radicalis sets seeds ever year. And got some from Dave one year. Never had germination on either. But then again, my seed curse is well known.

Seeds touchdown at Cyprus :yay:

Thank you so much Dave!

Cleaned and processed in the next 2-3 days, and where placed in container with moist substrate.

First germination occured 20 days later, and since then they are still germinating. Must be 15/28 so far and seems will be 100% germination.

No special treatment of sorts. Only thing i did differently, was to disinfect them with a 3% H2O2 solutuion instead of fungicide or chlorine, after i had cleaned off the fruit. The container is placed in a room with ambient temps around 28 C during the day and probably 24 during the night.

Will post a picture tomorrow with the germinated seeds.

I agree, for the cold hardy Chamaedorea spss excessive heat does nor promote germination. My outplanted C microspadix sets fruits and seeds germinate in my garden naturally, after having spent a whole chilly winter of mine in the free.

Konstandinos,

the substrate is called Attapoulgite. It can be found under the commercial name Aglev SI100 (or 200 or 300). It is a product i discovered here in Cyprus where it was imported as a surface coverage agent for cow farms to help absorb the animal's waste. It is produced in Greece by a company called GEOHELLAS. Here is the link http://geohellas.com/ .

There is a lot of information available to study about it, but in a quick description what this material does is to absorb water and keep it trapped in its prismatic crystal structure. It then releases it back according to the surrounding moisture level. I wasnt going to bring it to light yet, until i had contucted a number of experiments to test its properties in real life, but since you asked i can start from here. In due time i will prepare a topic in the Discussion forum about the different substrates i have used so far with pros and cons about each one.

What i have found extremely good about this product is that it seems to trap just the right amount of moisture needed in order for the seeds to germinate, while simultaneously seems not so pathogen friendly. Fungus or other pathogens will take quite longer to establish in this substrate, and perhaps this is attributed to its composition [ (Mg,Al)2Si4O10(OH)·4(H2O) ], structure or surface.

In short my experiences with other substrates

Zeolite ==> Dries out in few hours and dessicates everything around it

Perlite ==> Retains water, but an infection starting from a seed will spread in couple of days throughout

Vermiculite ==> Very tricky to achieve the correct moisture level

Peat or spaghnum ==> Easiest way to rot.

Coco ==> has to be the pure one with no fibers and other debri, has to be buffered and it requires replenishement of moisture after some time.

There are of course some good properties to the above, depending on how you use them but this will be discussed in a seperate topic.

Oh! Almost forgot. Attapoulgite is dirt cheap :innocent: . 15€ for a 25Kg bag.

Hope it helps.

George

Of which granulometry is the zeolite you have used, if you have used any? I brought to a very easy germination various Livistona seeds having used zeolite of two different kinds , both big one and fine one just like the material you use. In both cases seeds germinated within a week from sowing! You are right about zeolite drying out very fast, but this happens only in an aerated enviroment, in an airtight container instead it withholds enough moisture and it can not be otherwise, since there is no escape possibility for the moisture. If however an airtight container this time of year is good for the germination of cool loving palms ones or needing a temperature fluctuation throughout the day, is another story!
