Darold Petty's Parajubaea cocoides - ressurected in Tasmania ! spooky palm story !

Tassie_Troy1971

in September 2010 on my first palm tour of California Darold Petty gave me some old seed off his parajubaea cocoides . after many attempts at trying to germinate the seed soaking , putting in the fridge taking out , heat pad :indifferent: , i eventually left them in tall tubes in my shade house where the seeds like everything else were watered automatically by sprinkler system twice a week ! most of the potting mix had subsided away leaving a dry old cocoides seed on the surface . 2 weeks ago i pulled them out of the shade house t o throw away as i thought they would never germinate .

I went outside late this afternoon to empty the pots to use for another palm . Amazingly as Darold was watching me the seed had shooted a long root then we found two more very healthy Parajubaea cocoides that had apparently waited all these years until their Master Darold ! :bemused: took up temporary residency on my property . Looking at what we saw it appears that the seeds had germinated when Darold arrived in Australia over a week ago ! SPOOKY Indeed ! :mrlooney:

The awakening as it her the Masters Voice " Hello you little rascals " said Darold as he cradled the baby seeds !

Weird!!!

I got some seeds from the P. cocoides in the Oakland Palmetum in 2014 that still haven't germinated. I'd pretty much given up on them so Darold, if you're ever in London let me know so that you can awaken the seeds with your dulcet tones :greenthumb:

Give these at least a decade before you give up on them.

I just got another germination from my 1999 Parajubaea import. Still a few left to germinate after 16 years.

Troy....was Led Zepplins' "Stairway to Heaven" playing in the background when you discovered it? ...... Now THAT would make it really spooky.

I see one tap root being half way rotten! Treatment with fungicide is imo necessary!
