2014/2015 Winter in south Europe

Recommended Posts

Alicante

It's because all of them are in a park outside Madrid! They won't get any type of protection during winters so that impressed me... They're at ~700m altitude 300-400km far from the sea.

I've encountered a syagrus (living syagrus) and another less resistant palms in Alcoy, which is itself colder than Madrid. I'll put photos later, but I am really impressed about their cold resistance. They are living in both 2008 and 2012 street view, and last week when I went here they were living too, without any protection, and it was 0°C but this year Alcoy got almost -5 one day.

Syagrus romanzoffiana can take a fair bit of frost, they just need a hot summer climate so any damaged fronds can be replaced...

Here today was overcast again with a high of just 14.5C after an overnight low of 12.4C.

And this the most relevant to my garden weather station. It is a private one connected to WU's network.

That map is one of the most Europe's accurate weather maps ;) but those temps from the Wetterzentrale map I think they weren't for Dubrovnik city.

Look at it now, it changed! Because it changes by every hour, is a gif. The temp for 'Dalmatia' (idk what is Dalmatia, the south croatian coast¿?) was accurate because they showed the temps for Cilipi and a bit southern from Gruda, not your city temps (as I can see from here). That's what it showed 1 and 2° because they were the real temps close to Dubrovnik, like in your map where Cilipi and Gruda get lot of cold compared to you, I think they use those temps at night.

Be calm mate they aren't Dubrovnik's ones! that's why I asked you some pages ago why is that difference of temperature in a very short space, because I was looking at that map and you can got 14 and Cilipi 9 so I was impressed, but now I know that it's for the warm currents :) (in your map I see that Cilipi is 1°, so they were the temps for Cilipi/Dubrovnik airport I think) because they show the temps of Dubvronik city only during the day. Look at the map now, Spain, Italy or Greece has a lot more temps than at night. And if you look the Dubrovnik zone now you'll see 4-5 different temps in the same zone. At night they show the temperatures from a lot less places, and mainly airport ones.

BTW it doesn't matters it's a simply weather map and I was pretending to show overall Spain temps, obviously it's not precise at all but it's one of the most precise Europe overall maps, at least showing Spain's temps; I discovered it several years ago in this forum. And the temps I think they were for the Dubrovnik airport, because for example for me it showed yesterday 13º but it was at Alicante airport (we got 13,1) which is about 70-80km far from me, they normally get airport references like the most of Europe-maps weather websites.

Look for example the temperatures right now match Cilipi and Gruda, so it wasn't Dubrovonik city. BTW it doesn't matter, is a simple map. :laugh2:

Grrr, Im constantly trying to avoid this debate so Im just going with few statements.

Yes, Dalmatia is a region in costal Croatia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalmatia

and they key for such differences in temperatures is altitude.

Most of region looks like this

3004.jpg

meaning we are surrounded with a high mountains just 1-2 km from the sea line.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biokovo

Its like a shield that protect us from Northen cold spells and keeps warmer air from the sea.

Thats an example of what looks funny on maps Cikas is forcing all the time when U look my area,

one of the stations located in Makarska shows temp on 1700m above sea level and its just 4km from center of Makarska.

No, it's not a debate man! It's a simple Europe weather map, no one was trying to say look at the coast of Croatia, it's cold! Because those temps aren't even for Dubrovnik. Cikas if you still think that I'm involved in that "climate battle" from the last month, not, i'm not man! I just wanted to show Europe temps, maybe you thinked I wanted to discredit you or something but i'm not! when I look those maps I am interested in Spain and the temperatures of Spain, not any other place! Everyone has to talk about his own country, like we all are doing, I'm not gonna talk about yours again, my friend :laugh2:

No one is trying to say that Dubrovnik has less centigrades than in real life, so for that I explained that Wetterzentrale is very precise but it not showed Dubvronik city temps. Those were temps for Cilipi (Dubrovnik airport) and Gruda. And I can afirm it:

5fhkxu.jpg

4º in Cilipi, 0º in Gruda and 2º in Podgorica. Exactly the same as the map of Wetterzentrale:

1zqeoeh.jpg

And finally, we can agree that according to this map, Wetterzentrale show the temps of Cilipi, Gruda and Podgorica. :)

Be calm mate, I don't want to start any discussion again, and when I put those kind of extended-Europe temperatures chart, I do not put a special emphasis on Croatia; even I don't put any emphasis on any place that's not Spain :greenthumb:

Finally today was sunny, finally!! After all this time we finally got a totally sunshine day. Today the maximum temperature reached 20.1ºC and minimum temperature 12,8ºC.

Now we have 15.8ºC, it's very confortable outside! :)

And according to the predictions finally we gonna get normal weather and normal temps. :yay:

I'm not even tried to start a discussion. I just commented a map and temperatures for Dalmatia.
Not just for south Dalmatia, but for whole Dalmatia. Temperatures on map for northern and central Dalmatia were much lower on the map than in
reality.

And yes like I already stated before. Different altitude means different temperatures. All stations are on different altitude ( and higher altitude here usually means lower temperatures ).

Temperatures right now at 2:00h.

Yes yes! I agreed you at all. I said that I don't knowed why those things until you said me that thing with the warm currents and how they affect in your zone, and the altitude too. That thing with the altitude is like in all parts, when you go higher you get more cold.

If you look at the map itself at night only shows 4 temperatures of Croatia; (only 2 of Dalmatia) I was "investigating" a little bit and I see that they show (with Cilipi and Gruda) the weather of Split's airport ("Resnik") and Zadar's airport ("Zemunik") which according to Pljusak and Wetterzentrale right now at 3:52 they got exactly the same temperature, and the same like yesterday. Wetterzentrale is precise because they use the best local weather stations so for sure they use the same weather stations as Pljusak! Like I was saying they mainly use only airport ones at night. Yes you don't started any discussion! I only wanted you to know that I don't want to start any dispute another time and if you were thinking I was trying to discredit you or something, you got my word that I was not pretending to do that. :greenthumb:

Overnight low of 14.9; it seems it gonna be the lowest temperature today until tomorrow's morning. Now 20.2° but 30-35km/h winds.

Now finally come normal temps and sun and now we get again this damn sick wind. This winter is the worst in those last 10 years. Very very disgusting the start of this 2015 meteorologically talking :(

As spring is just around the corner & the sun getting stronger every day (UV of 3.4 this afternoon) I did a little gardening today & planted a nice Passiflora quadrangularis. Hopefully I wont have to wait too long for the beautiful & fragrant flowers :)

Here the yesterday lowest finally remains 14,9; so for sunday, 15 February it remains 22,4°/14,9°

Saturday was 20,1°/12,8° so officially from this week, the sun is gonna be shining (this week a couple precipitations at the start of the week) but normal weather and temps, no temps under 10° predicted for the next 15 days (only a single day with 9° predicted, all the others +10) so, it officialy terminated the temperature irregularities like the cold waves, at least for this year!

Now 15,4° and seems to be almost the same day as yesterday; but from tuesday we'll have a bit of rain.

Today quite weird day, because tomorrow we'll have rain.

The day started with a bit more than 15º; reaching a minimum of 14,2º at 8:00 and reaching 21.5º as the maximum temperature at 13:00, but then started to appear heavy clouds and the temps made a huge decline; with only 16,3º at 16:00. The lowest temperature reached before midnight was 13,2º. So for Monday, 16 February remains 21.5/13.2

Today started with colder temps like those 3 days we left behind. 12,7º at midnight but now we got 13,6º and increasing. Tomorrow i'll update with more info! :greenthumb: but it seems that the maximum temperature will not surpass 16, because according to the predictions it will rain in intervals during all the day.

Funny thing that today the maximum temperature in Spain was reached by Málaga, with 24.8º. Hotter than Tenerife today lol! :laugh2: Tenerife Sur airport reached the hottest temperature for today in the island, 23.9º

Cloudy and raining in intervals all day. Temperatures for Tuesday, 17 February: 15,6/12,7 today was a really weird day, but really really. Maximum temperature reached between 11 and 12:00. Then brutally decreased to only 13,3ºC, rising again progressively until it reached 15,1ºC at 00:00 of today. Now we got 14ºC. Ugly and wet weather but at least now we got warm minimum temperatures. Well, a bit warmer than normal; but they at least compensate the low maximums, in the late half of February the normal maximums are 18-19-20ºC, but with those ugly clouds... :( Perhaps this saturday we gonna get a totally average temperature for this epoque of the year; with 19/9 predicted and sunny for saturday. Sunny too on sunday and 21ºC predicted.

Snow again here in Melissia... Many plants tucked away inside but these(and others) will have to toughen it out once again...

Eastern Europe is getting the last cold wave from this year. Istanbul which is between the Mediterranean and the Black sea getting -2 at this hour... :o

Here colder than normal in all Spain too. Clouds in almost all the coastal places.

30jqmtc.jpg

Here today it arrived to 16º but now the temps made the same thing like yesterday, an huge decrease; now we got 14.5ºC because it's cloudy and it's getting wet. The day started with sun and clouds, but now another time rain clouds. The same happens in all the East of Spain, all cloudy.

jh33ft.jpg

It's quite strange where we got clouds on the East but they got too on the South... :indifferent: this February is very weird hahah!

Here now we got 12,9ºC and it seems it rising up. Yesterday, Wednesday 18 of February, the temps were 16/13,3.

necl8h.gif

But only 7ºC at Mallorca (6ºC in the picture is from the international airport of Palma) and a lot of cold in central and north Spain. For example Madrid right now has 1º (0ºC at the airport) and A Coruña only 4º (which doesn't appears in the photo); the normal averages are 4ºC more for both of them! And in La Coruña is quite strange to see only 4º in the second half of February. We are getting weird temps in almost all Europe lol.

I see a lot of cold in East Europe too. Someone from Greece/Turkey/Serbia, etc... can tell what is happening ? Do you got a cold wave right now?? OMG those -5 near Thessaloniki (that -5 is at high altitude, right? or at least with Google relieve appears to be mid-high altitude) and -4 in Kavala and Thessaloniki are reallying shocking and impressing me! :w00t: all the Mediterranean coastline must be frozen. What some marvelous pictures can be taked at the sunrising! Imagine all those CIDP from Kavala near to the coastline with the first few meters of the Mediterranean coastline frozed. A picture to remember! I don't knowed that those places can get even -4 in February. :hmm:

Finally here all night the same. From 00:00 to 07:00 got 0.1ºC variation. We'll see how are the temperatures tomorrow...

OMG this is the coldest day i've seen this entire winter in some parts of Europe. I normally check all days at least a couple of times Wetterzentrale; and what I am seeing today I have not seen this in this winter. -6 between Greece and Turkey! -5 in Constanta, frozen temps in all the North Adriatic, light freezing/touching freezing zones in almost all Mediterranean from Girona to Marseille, Girona with 1 or Marseille with 2 for example, and Montpellier with 0; -4 in the north mountains of Spain (those temps are normal on cold waves, and now in Spain there isn't any cold wave...), Hungary and former Czechoslovakia getting frozen, Slovenia too, 0 in Catanzaro... AND -10 IN ANAPA! Which is in the shore of the Black sea!! :blink2: While Greenland, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Bielorrusia are getting hotter temps than normal. While UK and Norway are totally warm. lol!

It snowed very well in Melissia last night with -2C and everything is still covered in snow. It's warming up fast now and the sun is shinning, so it should mostly melt today.

Pyrgos was frost-free with a minimum of 1,6C :)

Thessaloniki can get pretty cold in winter and Kavala too. Northern Greece in general can get quite cold. Only the coast, the islands and Southern Greece avoid cold in winter and are from 8b/9a to 10b/11a(maybe).

Temperatures are only to rise from now on and we got a great forecast for the coming days and next week!

pRoeZa is right, it is so far the f* coldest day of whole winter here. It has even snowed heavily during last might in the city center of Athens, where I live, and there is still until now snow on the balcony, in shady places, and it is ice frozen! At 10:00 am local time, temp outside is only 2 C! And I have uncovered all tender palms in my garden! Kostas what is the lowest you have recorded in Melissia during current f* cold spell? Im in the hobby for decades and on my scout's honor I have never ever experienced a winter with such a frequency of reoccuring severe cold spells!

Pics from my balcony taken today at 9:30 am local time

I only recorded -2C, which is about the temperature i recorded at the previous serious snow event as well. But this time it was already -1C at midnight and we got freezing rain at the middle of the night! This is a rare event, there was thick ice on all stonework in the morning, not walkable. The plants were not enclosed in ice though as happens in colder climates with freezing rain.

I do not like the color on some of my plants and i don't think its justifiable by the -2C. My potted P. cocoides is looking a little too dark and one of my potted Livistona mariae got a strange patterning on it, the other didn't though.

Hope they don't damage, at least not severely. These have seen worse temperatures here and longer cold durations, so i definitely did not expect that. Hope its nothing and it fixes like the dark discolouration on Washintonia.

I would call this a relatively mild snow/freeze event for Melissia but the freezing rain is not common. I saw on the weather station that you got it too in Athens and the southern suburbs as well, which is not good.

I also don't remember so many snow events in a winter. We usually get 2 hard ones that last a week each. This year we got shorter duration ones but many.

I hope your plants are ok from this freeze

I am talking around 2am. Snow is not too damaging generally apart from its weight. Its more like an insulation than a problem, the low air temperatures is the main damaging factor with damage being governed by their duration and wind speed. Any damage by snow is just superficial

:( guys sorry to hear that. I don't knowed that a cold wave could affect so much Greece; I always knowed that Spain and Greece are the countries in Europe with the most lookalike climate (Italy at his north has Alpine climate and Spain no) here for example in the worst day of this year we arrived to 3°C which is the lowest temperature i've seen those last years(at least from 2001/02 when I started to like meteorology). But in Girona happens the same as in Thessaloniki and Kavala, it's at the Mediterranean coastline but it's one of the places with the most cold during the cold waves. If you see the temperature map during a cold wave, Girona will be the coldest place in this zone at the sea; even colder or the same than Montpellier, but colder than Perpignan or Marseille. Sometimes Girona gets colder than Madrid haha! Cold air currents maybe? Idk.

I know that in the coastline of Kavala are several CIDP. Do you think they're damaged? In Madrid this year in the cold wave they arrived somewhere between -4/-4.5 at the coldest day; but some palms with -4 at Madrid got some light light burning in the tip of the leaves; not all, but some of them yes. With -6 they get light damages?

Really sorry to hear that Phoenikikias. Idk why a cold wave like this arrives in late winter lol... Sure you'll gonna have a good warm spring and all of them will enjoy, Kostas those ones doesn't seem very damaged, sure they will get healthy green again! :)

BTW I quite envy you guys because here even at the mountains we doesn't saw any snow, only the day I mentioned last month it snowed in the nearby mountains at ~+500m but when I was going to the mountains, not even 1 hour after the light snowfall, no trace of any, all was converted to water real quick. :(

Thessaloniki and Kavala are not directly on the coast. Their coastal parts remain warmer, 8a/b and above. Inland it gets cold at that high latitude in Greece.

This cold front did not have record low temperatures in general, so i think the CIDP in Kavala should be fine. They are on the coast and the coast does not get too cold, not near the temperatures listed for the inland parts of town. -6C does not damage CIDP normally.

Thanks, the discolouration on the leafs fixed fast as the temperature rose and the leafs got red again(L. mariae is reddish when young). Its strange how they can do that! :)

In Melissia it snows annually more or less and there is plenty of snow for play. I sure wish it never snowed and never got cold. In Pyrgos it only snows once in 20years and its only snowflakes falling and melting as soon as they touch anything...We never get any snowcover in Pyrgos, the mountains to the east do get it high up.
