Drought

Great to see those sultry temps.  If anyone deserves them its you.  Plants go crazy  :P

Interesting discussion about humidity & relative comfort.  Higher moisture values during winter are fine since it raises mean temperatures.  But frankly, during summer, humidity can be quite suffocating though is great for the skin

Not being able to go outside until well after sunset is no fun on days with 100F+/38c [over 100 people died in a heat wave one weekend last summer because dewpoints were above 70 degrees /  RH 80%]. That's considered miserable in Cali and everyone but palm affecionadoes/weather nerds complained big time

50% chance of rain here tomorrow.  I'm NOT holding my breath.

Yesterday the NWS had 70% chance of rain for Friday - now it's dropped it to 40 - 50%.  The decrease is not good news.

On TV last night, they said it was a 100-year drought.  Lake Okechobee is dropping to near record levels and there's a threat to S. FL's water supply.  Very frightening.

Let's hope the little "blob" down by Honduras can crank itself into a rainmaker and come our way.

Ray, I think it's gonna happen..... I see alot of moisture headed your way.. I'll keep my fingers crossed.....

We could really use a good soaking here too... I've had to water around the clock - and if we don't get some rain soon, I'm afraid we're gonna start having the water restrictions too.

O.K. I may be setting myself up, but I'm a little hopeful we might actually get some rain here. Just checked TWC and they have 80% chance of rain Friday and 70% chance Saturday. Please let it be so.

Ran across this map showing how low Lake Okeechobee is, compared to normal. Lake O. is 730 sq. miles and the second largest lake in the country. They are now saying this qualifies as a 100 year drought in severity.

This is the drought index map from back in March.

DroughtIndexkbdi-mean-state.jpg

Here is today's index. It shows Palm Beach County being better off overall than before, but I can tell you that my section of it is still dark red.  :(  But what is really amazing is how hard this drought is now affecting virtually the entire state.

Bren,

Doing the rain dance here as well. 2" so far and still a steady rain coming down. No puddles anywhere. Even the drainage ditches are still dry. Testament to how dry the soil was. It is just soaking it all up like a sponge. Looks good for more through the night, tomorrow and even Sunday. Yahooooo!

A little over 2" here so far as well and still coming down.  From the looks of the radar, we are about to get a nice deluge in another hour or two.

In all of May, my station only logged 1.38" and that was all in one day.

Well I'm a happy camper this morning. Logged a total of 4 1/4". It rained all night. For May I had the big ZERO, so this is more than a welcome relief. Not a puddle anywhere, although there is some standing water in the drainage ditch, but going down fast. Good chance of more rain today.  :D

Rain keeps coming up here in Tarpon Springs as well!

Its falling down at a nice steady clip of about 1.3 in/hr (33 mm/hr) with some heavier downpours periodically rolling through.

7.5 inches of the wet stuff, standing water in the swampy "royal zone" . Great stuff.

The rain was so wonderful!  Everything's perking back up and for once, the crotons n' hibbies don't look half-wilted.  Loved it so much, I went out and putzed around in the garden, rearranging things - yes, in the rain, it felt that good :)

Sunny,

I'm hoping for another round of the wet stuff.

Much of south Florida and east central Florida hit the jackpot today.  Most of the west central coast somehow missed out and will likely remain dry for the remainder of the week.

Ray,

You weren't the only one left out of the rain mix yesterday, unfortunately!

My mom in Poincianna got 4.8 inches yesterday! Here in Titusville it rained  long and hard all around us,Cocoa,Merritt Island,  Space Center, and Melbourne, flooding many areas, but didn't even  hardly wet the pavement  here! :(

Maybe we will get some this afternoon?

We haven't gotten a good rain in several months.  We got a total of about 1.5" in may.  So far we had two days where it rained in June.  Total rainfall is .51" so far according to my weatherstation.  But the forecast doesn't have any great chances for more in the near future.  A couple days have chances of isolated storms.  Hopefully one will drop a couple inches of rain on my yard.  The city of Atlanta is down to one day a week for watering between 12 am and 10 am.  We are still on every other day restrictions between 12 and 10 am.

Been raining mostly to the south of us, so we haven't been getting any of the bounty the last couple days. :(

We still need lots more rain in the worst way.

It actually rained here tonight about 9:30 or 10:00 PM. Somewhat of a storm. Unusual for it to rain so late in the evening, but I am not complaining! Maybe a half an inch, I still need to get that rain guage working....

City officials are getting nervous and suggesting 10% conservation of water.  The outlook goods grim  :o

Local climatologist predicts hotter temperatures than last summer [119F in metro LA July 2006]  :o  And it appears a La Nina is slowly forming.

Still no relief.  More hand watering tonight unless we get an unforseen storm.  I'm not holding my breath.
