Ben, you should take pictures of the front of you house every year and do some side by sides as the years progress so we can get a time lapse profile of your garden.

Armed with lights in hand. Light strings untangled and ready to hang.

I got most of the lights up on this mild sunny afternoon. Tomorrow I'll finish between the rain showers hopefully.

Post pics when you have them up, Jim! Are you using LEDs, or traditional lights?

Mine are old style ceramic C7s. Plan is if we look like we are going to get a cold event - to apply a wrap as well, and maybe tie up the fronds. I still need to do the back yard plants with heat cables, lights, etc. But I am trying to hold off on that as long as possible. The 10-day isn't showing anything below the mid-40s, with plenty of moisture (yeah!) so going to hold off at least another week.

All - post pics of your palmy holiday decor/protection!

No rain overnight here and looks like it may mostly hold off now until this evening. Maybe you can get your lights done today, Jim!

Ben, I will post tonight. All my light strings are LED. The long range forecast looks very good with rain on and off and mild temperatures through the second week of December.

Awesome Jim!

Thanks Ben. We avid palm gardeners have to put our lights at ground level and on palm trunks 'cause you can't see them if you put them on the house. :winkie:

They are actually C7s, so lower wattage. Also, the bulbs themselves are not in contact with the palms. Question is - if we get a cold snap, and I wrap to maintain heat, will they then burn the palms? What say you all? I'll happily take a little bulb burn over palm death...but I am kind of learning as I go here in terms of protection techniques.

I'm learning too that's why I ask. And what burns worse, heat tape or c7s? At what temp would you wrap the kings? I'm gonna put some under live oak canopy so no frost.

I'd probably wrap the kings if it looked like it was going to get as low as the high-20s. Doesn't generally happen here, but if it does I'd be disposed to give them as much safeguarding as possible. What are your lows like? I'd think these would be a real challenge to keep going in 9a.

We stay above 25 probably 8 years out of 10. _Keith had one for a while and lost it in 2010. I don't think he ever wrapped/ heated it though. A king without protection would have been a goner this past year, but they grow fast and are cheap, right?

I suspect you could keep one going a while then, as long as you do give it some protection...
