South Florida Palm Society Fall Show & Sale

On November 1 and 2, the South Florida Palm Society will hold its annual Fall Show & Sale featuring “The World's Largest Sale of Rare and Exotic Palms.” Each visitor may take home a free palm seedling while quantities last. Be sure to stop at the information table for advice on proper methods for growing a variety of palms. This event takes place at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Rd., Coral Gables. The Garden is home to a world-class collection of palms and cycads, as well as a very popular butterfly collection. Sale hours are 9:30-4:30 both days. Free admission for Garden members. Admission for non-members: $25 for adults, $18 for age 65+, $12 for children 6-17, free for children 5 and under.

I understand traffic was really light again this year & I'm sure this has come up, but why not change the venue from Fairchild to a place that doesn't charge $25 just to enter? I think the $25 entry fee to buy ANYTHING is turning a lot of people off, & closes the vendors to anyone open to impulse buying. I'm a member & I was going to bring a few friends that would have certainly bought something but the "$25 cover charge" turned them off. My opinion.

I let my membership lapse several years back. Mostly because the yearly membership kept escalating exponentially. I live just 8 miles north of Fairchild and surely would have stopped by grabbing a palm or two. The unreasonable $25 entry fee just to visit the sale prohibited my attendance.

Here is the kick in the butt. As a Miami-Dade county resident who pays a fairly decent amount of property taxes, the vast majority of Fairchild sits upon Miami-Dade County owned property. Essentially I must cough up $25 to visit County owned property. Maybe its time for the Fairchild coffers to get hit with rental fees from the County.

Mounts Botanical Garden held their fall plant sale this past weekend as well. The entry fee was free to members and $10 for non-members. Being a member I got to get in an extra hour early and the place was already packed. I ended up stopping by again on sunday afternoon and it was still just as crowded.

In years past Fairchild had a reciprocal admission policy that would allow members of other gardens to visit for free. Recently they placed a 90 mile exclusion on this reciprocal admission thus blocking members from all other gardens in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties from entering. I had thought about going but $25 just get in is definitely a turn off.

- A few awards were handed out at the SFPS Sale this past Sunday. They had the usual categories. If Jeff looks surprised it is because he is accepting an award for a palm he didn't enter in the show...

- Jeff won three awards, including Best of Show for his large 25 gallon Cyphophoenix nucele that anchored the front of the booth.

- A wider view of the palm. The photo is straight but vendor Ronnie Croci was leaning a bit...

- A 7 gal. Mauritiella armata was in the booth on Friday evening during the judging but sold sometime on Saturday. It won Best Palmate palm even though it was not entered in the show. Judges have the discretion to choose an additional plant if they find it interesting enough. A 5 gal. Licuala sallehana won Most Rare and was not present either. It was taken home Saturday night. Signs and stakes stood in as placeholders.

- I did however photograph the Licuala sallehana when it was in the booth on Saturday morning before the sale opened. Flagging tape to keep the palm nuts from walking away with it. Just picture the ribbon on it, and the idea will be complete.

I've even been a Fairchild member for years so would have gotten in free ( well, except for plane fare from Virginia, plus a motel room, plus a rental car, plus missed work)....

Maybe another year I'll make it!

Thanks Cindy! I take great pride in growing my palms and especially keeping certain species over the years to grow up to a size not often seen. Overall, it was great to spend time with the vendors and customers.
