Hello,

I have a bunch of T. Fortunei seedlings and I am wondering how I should protect them in the winter here in zone 6 Massachusetts. I also have one older T Fortunei with about a foot of trunk that I need to protect. Oh and last but not least a needle palm that is about a foot tall overall. I need a way to protect all of these palms, but I don't want to go overboard because eventually I want them to be able to fight the winter on their own (when they get older and are more like trees). Any advice and help would be great! Thank you!

Are they in the ground? A little more info on your placement, overhead canopy, your temperatures would help also. Welcome to Palmtalk. ...it may take a few days to get the answers so keep checking back.

My suggestion would be to cover with pinestraw and a big black pot.....others may have better methods.

Here are some examples of what I do here in Omaha, NE

Windmill palms in cages I make. String of Christmas lights attached to a Thermocube regulate temps inside, but also as back up I buried 6 feet of pipe heat tape around root ball that has built in thermostat keeps roots from freeing.

This is a 1/2 barrel I use for smaller palms with small string of 25 Christmas lights inside, thick plexiglass cover so natural light gets in.

Here is a full size barrel I simply turn upside down over a palm, Mexican Fan Palm. Again, Christmas lights inside keep it from freezing.
