It would be so much fun to believe, but like you, for lack of evidence, I can't.

I am thinking more Neanderthal on that one. "Scientists also know that Neanderthals and modern humans interbred at some level, which is why about 2% of our genes, on average, are Neanderthal in origin." Recessive gene popped out maybe?

keith the evidence for modern humans & neanderthals interbreeding is not all that strong. http://humanorigins.si.edu/evidence/genetics/ancient-dna-and-neanderthals/interbreeding

Actually Paul that is not true. In Northern Europe it was believed that the Neanderthals died out. In fact they were partially bred out. 1-2% of some Northern Europeans have Neanderthal DNA.

dicated that Neanderthals were genetically closer to Europeans and Asians than they were to Africans. It meant that somewhere along the line, European and Asian humhat was, sort of, quite shaking to me. I thought this must be a statistical fluke. It was not quite significant; this would surely go away when we have more data.

I had just watched a documentary on Neanderthals which is what I had mind when I wrote that, but to be honest I was taking Bigfoot or my comment all that seriously either way. Of the many things I care about, whether early man was playing hanky panky among species is not in the list. UNLESS, Bigfoot is found, in which case I want to know who he/she has been sleeping with cause I have seen some hairy people out there.

It's established that modern humans and neanderthals interbred. Due to the lack of Neanderthal DNA in our mitochondria though, it's likely that this was limited to male neanderthal/female H. sapiens pairings. However, mitochondrial DNA evolves about 10 times faster than nuclear DNA (due to the oxidative stress in the mitochondria), so it could be that we don't see it because it simply went away over time.
