Marcus' Huge Lemurophoenix Flowering

Recommended Posts

Jeff sent me these photos this morning - with the following caption - LEMUROPHOENIX WITH PATRIOTIC COLORS & FLOWER SPIKE.

What an incredible palm, and one that will be nice to have abundant seedlings in the hands of palm gardeners around the world. But it is too early to start counting chickens yet - as I believe this it the first inflorescence - but it sure looks nice and healthy.

Just another day at the nursery and garden of Jeff and Suchin Marcus. :)

Dean (and Jeff),

Spectacular colors and that particular palm has been a super fast grower! Really exciting to see its development in just a half dozen years or so. :)

Spectacular!!! Breathtaking!!! Got to be one of if not the most beautiful palm species especially grown to perfection in Jeff Marcus' garden!! Does anyone know how long it takes for fruit to develop and ripen? Hopefully it'll set seed on its first attempt.:drool::drool:

Breathtaking perfection. That palm has all the necessary ingredients to qualify as the most awesomely beautiful palm species. I need to look away before I drool all over myself.

Spectacular!! I fell of my chair on seeing the photos yesterday...and once again today ! I think we should have a photo of the month (or quarter) which can be a permanent thumb in the home page -- this one will probably be photo of the decade !

This should be seen by anyone who thinks palms are plain green and dull

Bo and Dean touch on an important fact: These are not slow. I have four in the ground (bought them immediately when I saw them on the Floribunda list) and they churn out a spear every six weeks or so. They have to be WAY up there in the beauty to speed ratio (especially for Madagascar stuff).

Dean, What is the state of the other Lemurophoenix species that was featured in your 2008 video tour of Jeff's garden? Has anyone identified that one as being within the same genus but distinct from halleuxii?

Lovely baby!

Just wish Hawaii wouldn't be so far away from where I am.

Jeff Marcus's and other hawaiian gardens are a big dream for me, starting a garden in Ceylon….

But we have tea around the garden and cinnamon in between the palms :) they don't!

I believe you are referring to what has become known as "small seed." I can't tell you for sure - it's been a year or more since I have seen it. However, at that time I believe we commented that it was looking more and more just like the original. I'll try and remember to get an updated pic next time I am there.

(btw - your CR garden is really coming along)

Thanks Dean. I remember you commented that John Dransfield thought this was the most impressive palm from Madagascar and I'd have to concur. It is great to know that there will be ample seed for sale soon.

Stunning! You can tell the old leaf was ripped off in a hurry! (I would have done the same, hehe).

Is this the first time a Lemur is flowering at Marcus garden? I think he's already selling seedlings with a 'domestic' seed origin...
