A beautiful morning at Block Botanical Garden

Recommended Posts

Mandrew968

Earlier this year, I was fortunate enough to have been chosen to help out during the Block Botanical Gardens stop, for the IPS Biennial. As such, I got to know the gardens and the man behind this jewel of South Florida, Dr. Jeff Block, who has been maintaining excellence in horticulture for nearly 25 years! Spending time with Dr. Block, at his fantastic garden is an amazing treat on its own--getting to meet a lot of the people I have come to know and respect, on Palmtalk, was icing on the cake. I will start with a few photos and then let anyone chime in with recollections or pictures of the day, then I will further the thread with more photos--thank you everyone for such an amazing experience!

Andrew,

Thanks for posting these photos! The Block garden tour was an absolute treat, and it was great to finally meet you and a few other Floridians! :) And of course Dr. Block! :) Here are a few of my photos from this spectacular garden. :)

Thanks Andrew for introducing this thread, I've been posting hither and dither in other threads and now I'm ready to post a swagful of photos from this visit. I loved the garden, very relaxing and beautiful is how I would describe it. Well done to Jeff Block for a tremendous garden, and all you helpers on the day were friendly and professional in your duties as garden guides, made us feel special and it was a special treat to be there, I mean that sincerely.

Okay, let's start posting...

I was eyeing off that hammock by the end of the day, I could see myself laying there, cold beer, music playing, maybe James Taylor, Neil Young etc. Heaven.

Wow! I began this thread to start a buzz about Dr. Block's fantastic garden, when shortly after, my health and summer took me from it, but man did everyone step up with great posts and photos! It was unreal to meet everyone--a truly warm and encouraging experience. I will post more pictures that I have, later, but I doubt I can do much better than what has already been posted. Dr. Block is a very interesting and friendly individual that I hope everyone got to meet, at the Biennial. Bo, Cindy, Lee, Wal, Kim and everyone else I met from our favorite forum, It was an absolute pleasure!

We have planted some really neat plants this year. One of the highlights has been this newly described palm from the Colombian border. If it grows half as well as it has in the nursery, I will be pleased. Hope you all enjoy

      - March 13th, 2020 - It is today, the second Friday of the Spring 'Ganza at Searle Brothers Nursery, and the activity level is slow as usual for the day. With the free time, I was browsing around the landscape checking out the palms to see if they were doing anything photo worthy. I was looking over the huge Beccariophoenix alfredii, as I always do when something caught my attention, hence the 6 ft. (2m) ladder positioned next to the trunk. After verifying the find via the ladder, I decided to take photos from the outside-in...

      - A couple of overall shots from different positions, with cloud shade and (B) with direct sun. This view allowed the nearby Coccothrinax macroglossa to offer assistance as a scale object. The palm has reached and surpassed the height of the shadehouse nearby, 15 ft. (4.5m).

      - He has put on a widened base with a good 4 ft. (1.2m) of clear trunk. The newer nodal scars on the trunk are forming further and further apart, the taller the palm has become. The petioles and leaf bases still have that cool and original color unique to the species. Those fibrous auricle-like extensions on either side of the leaf bases are smooth and pliant like kraft paper.

      - Before taking any of the photos, I was standing in this exact spot ready to move on to the next palm when I looked up and saw this... [boom] A newly emerging inflorescence spathe, jutting out from the trunk among the inner petioles. One could not see it unless you were standing in this very spot. This shot represents how it looked as I saw it. (B) Same position, zoomed in a bit.
