Palms of the Miami biennial in 150 photos

Recommended Posts

I've finally sorted through my photos from the biennial, which I'll now post in more or less chronological order. I have IDs for almost everything, bug please correct any mistakes you see.

Our first stop was Highland Hammock State Park, which contains an amazing old growth forest. The mid day light was brutal for photos, but here's a couple (mainly with Sabal palmetto in them).

We were then off to Jeff Searle's nursery, where we were greater in style with cold drinks and fantastic food! In addition to all the palms in containers for sale, there is an amazing collection planted out as a garden.

The next day we were off to Key West, with a couple of stops on the way. First was Mahogany Hammock in Everglades National Park.

There were quite a few very nice Acoelorrhaphe wrightii on the boardwalk trail, with some Sabal palmettos mixed in as well.

The next day was free, and Mike Lock, Larry Black, and I rented a car to head over to Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge. It was mind blowing, with Leucothrinax morrisii stretching for miles in all directions. There were also some Serenoa repens, Sabal palmetto, and Coccothrinax argentata. We ended up spending about 6 hours exploring the refuge...

The refuge also had a lot of nice wildlife, including, of course, Key Deer. I saw quite a few of the deer, and one of them even let me follow him around for almost an hour while he grazed!

When we finished at the Wildlife Refuge we decided to head back to Bahia Honda State Park. When we had visited the previous day the wind was blowing pretty hard, which made it difficult to take decent photos. Unfortunately, we arrived at the state park around 2:00, and the harsh sun made photography difficult (although, I of course still took a few photos).

Thanks for all the replies! It was a fantastic biennial - many thanks to Ray, Scott, Paul, Susan, and everyone else who played a role in setting it up!

Great work Jack - a real feast for the eyes ~

For someone like me who hasn't had a lot of exposure to the palms of the Caribbean it's a great thread .
