Rat snake in Copernicia prunifera (FTBG)

I was taking a close-up picture of the old leaf bases of this palm, when Ralph Evans warned me: "Watch out, Peter, there is a snake above your head!" Sara Edelman, the FTBG palm and cycad manager, told me later that is was rat snake. A while ago she and a number of visitors witnessed a rat snake devouring a rat, which was a struggle of half an hour.

Not just a rat snake--a yellow rat snake! They are the least common of our rat snakes.

I see Black Rat Snakes around here all the time, but never a yellow.

Yeah I was kind of surprised to see a yellow down there, Probably somebody's pet that was released or escaped, We get Black rat snakes up here too, a lot of farmers protect them which is awesome, as they are invaluable for controlling rodent populations, Beautiful creatures!!

Yeah, Randy, I have the black ones in my front yard all the time too-we also call them black or grey racers.

I came out one summer morning & I thought, damn someone had cut up my black Sears garden hose. That was until the 5 foot piece slithered away.

Someone should transplant those palms to braheaAxel's garden.

Wonderful snake in a wonderful habitat.
