How to know when to say when?

Randy,

I hate to be a pessimist, but......

IMO that new frond should be much longer before it started to open up. And, its hard  to tell from the pic, but it looks like the leaflets on the opened frond are kind of curled or rolled up. Are they?

Dean,

If you are talking about the singed lookin one to the left of the spear in that last picture, you're right. That frond has looked that way for a long time, it's the last visible sign of the water neglect they experienced last year.

The green one that is open on the right seems normal to me...

I do notice that the new spear opening is shorter that the existing fronds, is this something to be soncerned about? I have another foxtail that had a shorter frond open this year and is doing well, the frond looks like it has grown larger since opening- but I can take a close look at it in the day time tomorrow and check.

I welcome your advice, even though it sounds grave!

IMO= in my opinion

IIRC= if I remember correctly

LOL= laugh out loud

I don't know all of these, but a lot of them you can figure out if you "insert a phrase" into the context of the statement.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Randy,

I was talking about the leaflets on the frond on the right.  See how yours look kinda rolled up like a cigarette? Not open and flat like in this pic.

OK, I see what you mean. The shorter new spear is picking up speed but not sure what the rolled leaves mean?

I have to admit, I was really excited that this palm pushed that frond out even though it appears curled. this was the first new frond this year after the accidental drought (water system failure) and when it opened very green I was elated.

The other one that died was about to open a spear around the same time as this one opened the curly frond, but it haulted, turned brown and went to that big palm garden in the sky.

My hope is that the curly woody is working it's way back to health and next spring it kicks into normal frond production and snaps out of looking marginal.

IMO.

It..........is........................ ALIVE!!!!!

(Just in time for Halloween)

OK, the virtically impaired frond has popped open, and even though it's not as tall as the other fronds it's still part of the family.

Actually, I'd like to know why this one's smaller in all seriousness. The "healthier" woody right next to this one also produced a smaller frond about 3 weeks ago, which is actually looking a little larger now- I think.
