Caudex Measurement

Whenever I see size mentioned, it usually says "in diameter", so I've always assumed it was by the diameter of the caudex.

Be careful with this and always ask. You will be surprised how they measure. And the measurements are always in their favor - I assure you. Some do cross section and some due height. I can tell you that those that sell by caudex size are usually charging more then those that sell by 'feel' (of course when you mail order, caudex size is needed). I will not mention names, but there are some here that have ridiculous caudex pricings. They are old school and come from the old belief you could make a killing on cycads and retire. Time has proven this false! But many hold onto this belief and sell their cycads at ridiculous prices. Do your research as these baby's get expensive for such a small plant. I prefer back yard growers. I have two referrals in SoCal I could set you up with. Both have realistic pricing and do it more as hobby then to gauge people.

On a side note, I am probably an anomaly. I got into cycads before palms. So when I went to rare palms I was like "Sh!t this is cheap." I guess when you are willing to pay almost $1000 for a nut only half size of your fist (middelburgensis anyone? :)), a rare palm isn't that expensive.
