Coccothrinax alta

Small in ground palm which stands about 24" high.

The "official" air temperature on my weather station (at about 4-5 ft above ground ) was 34F.  But, due to the still air, I measured 29F at ground level.

This palm was in the open and not exposed to frost.  Certer portions of skyward facing leaf surfaces on several leaves were damaged.

Updated pic as of this AM.  This particular species of Coccothrinax has disappointed me as this makes two years in a row with foliar damage.

Larry I have had a similar experience . I have found the stiffer frond coccothrinax's do better when you have frost and when it is just cold. Mine looks almost exactly like yours.

Thanks for the confirmation.....now I know it is not just my weak palm!  As mentioned, it was just temperature that did this damage as there was no frost.

I have been really surprised that such relatively "warm" temps could damage the foliage on this palm (even though it is still small).

My nearby miraguama and argentata seem unaffected.

I do have another oddball (some sort of small C. crinita hybrid, subspecies "vecicia" or somethign to that effect?) nearby that also got lightly burned this past February.  So, this one also seems a bit unhardy.

I am not familiar with that one but I do remember Jeff from Port Charlotte telling me about it. I am not planting to many coccothrinax with soft fronds for this reason myself.

Ive got maybe half a dozen different Coccothrinax/Thrinax and all came through this past winter fine. I suppsoe they have gained hardiness as they are older and larger.

My Cocothrinax saw about the same temp as yours and looks about the same. It had not even fully recovered from the damage it saw last year at 26 degrees. Also, mine takes a long time to show its damage, a month or more before you can tell.

When they are smaller, I would think 26F would really whack these guys.

The one in my pic above is now ~6-7 ft tall and has added a surprising amount of height in such a short time.
