California calling for drought State of Emergency

First 80s of 2014 at my house today. With the hot temps, more people are watering and adding further strain to the water table. This is going to be a long Summer

Looks like the first major Pineapple Express storm is lining up to hit Norcal this weekend. Could be some major mudslides unless tomorrow's storm can drop enough rain to properly wet the ground.

So there is hope for some easing of the drought.

Stage one water restrictions have been in place since last Summer. It's not as horrible as you make it out to be.

I have buckets in the shower to collect water. We reuse water from the sink as well.

Nice Mr. T avatar... Quit yo jibba jabba. I pity the fool who doesn't save his water

Anyway, we need at least 2-3 inches, because it is going to start warming up next week...

We might get up to 8 feet of snow in some areas of the mountains which is awesome news. Because according to these charts, 76-77 was better.

Depending on how much snow we get in the second half of Feb and March, we might actually still have a chance to get close to normal by Apr 1.

A full week of rain here in the foothills when finished by Tuesday. Snow transitioning to rain at high elevations with this warm system. It's a good start though.

Here's the rest of the story:

That NOAA graphic is a little misleading. Considering some areas were like 160% of normal for 2010-2011.

But what made this even worse is letting out more water than was needed last year from the reservoirs. LA reservoirs are about 100% and have water for two years while norcal is empty.

I've just spent the last few days re-routing thousands of gallons of roof run off and temporary Spring water all over the property to try to saturate the soil. Even after 6 inches of rain, the soil is bone dry about a foot down. This rain storm didn't even make a dent into the drought.

But the water re-routing has been well worth it, lots of palms have saturated soil now. It's been exhausting to run sump pumps and carry buckets all over the garden! It was so wet I had to wear a wetsuit.

More drought on the way.

LOOKING OUT THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH, DRIER AND WARMER WEATHER

IS A NEAR CERTAIN BET AS THE 500 MB RIDGE ALONG THE COAST

REBUILDS AND GOES BACK TO AROUND 3 STANDARD DEVIATIONS ABOVE

NORMAL. IN FACT, DURING THE LAST WEEK OF FEBRUARY WE WILL LIKELY

BE TALKING MORE ABOUT POTENTIAL RECORD HIGHS AND FIRE WEATHER

ISSUES -- SIMILAR TO WHAT WE SAW A FEW WEEKS AGO. LESS THAN 25% OF

THE GEFS BRING A TENTH OF AN INCH OF RAIN FOR ANY 24 HOUR PERIOD

TO SFO FOR THE LAST WEEK OF FEBRUARY INTO THE FIRST PART OF MARCH

AND IF THE EXPECTED 500 MB PATTERN VERIFIES, EVEN THAT LOW NUMBER

IS VERY OPTIMISTIC.

Yep, we're officially screwed

In Modesto, we've had exactly 3 inches of rain since last July.

Lately we've been in the 70's with lows in the 50's and trees are leafing out.

Yup... I think we are screwed.

But I enjoy the way above normal temps!

Modesto, CA USDA 9b

July/August average 95f/63f

Dec/Jan average 55f/39f

Average lowest winter temp 27f

Record low temp 18f

Record high temp 113f

Woke up to a wet courtyard this past Thursday, and tonight around 10 it started to sprinkle. Got a decent downpour (radar showing yellows and oranges) passing over us. Kind of brief but nice to hear on the roof. Have had a few foggy nights/early mornings as well. I really am missing our normal weather pattern.

The front lawn is looking greener. It looks like we've lost a Ilex sky pencil to the December freezing weather which was surprising (suppose to be a zone 6 to 9 shrub and we never went below 9a). South bay hasn't had anywhere near the amount of rain north of San Francisco has received this month but even a little bit makes things look better. The eastern ranges are still looking dry. Usually they'd be a nice green by now. Our C humilis is back in bloom and the one spathe on our mule finally opened. Decidous trees in our area have been budding, the tulip magnolias have flowered and are getting their green leaves. I'm still hopefull that we'll get more rain this month and next.

Zone 9b (formerly listed as Zone 9a); Sunset 14

Clear and sunny today. Ground wet but Wunderground isn't showing anything else coming our way until end of month when hopefully we'll get three days of rain on the weekend. Fog in the evening and morning would be nice at least....
