PRA Team in search of Corypha in SoCal!

MattyB

Recommended Posts

This Saturday was wet and cold, but that didn't stop The Original PRA Team from braving the elements in search of a mythical west coast Corypha. I'm not sure if he's a member here on Palmtalk, but Ken Blackford brought this palm to our attention on facebook. Thanks Ken! So, we headed out to investigate this fresh lead on a palm not known to grow in our area. What will we find? Will it turn out to really just be a green Bizzie? Perhaps just a large Sabal? Let's go and find out!

ERRRRRRRRRRTTTTTT! Pump the brakes!!!! Some Spring Valley Phoenix need some pics too!

We arrive at Bob's house and no sooner than we do, it starts to rain! Dagnabbit! Oh well, that won't stop the PRA Team from pressing on! Here's Paul and Bob all strapped into the PRA Action Van , ready for blast off.....or a slow acceleration with minimal abrupt speed and direction changes so as to avoid skidding out on the wet streets....but you get what I mean!

It wasn't hard to spot the palmy yard that awaited our uninvited PRA. Warning, do not attempt an uninvited PRA without first reading the PRA Team's "How To Do A PRA" article published in the PSSC Palm Journal. You might find yourself on the business end of a hot poker or other potentially lethal weapon without being trained in the skills of the uninvited PRA.

Oh My God!!!!!! Run for your lives it's a vicious Burmese Mountain Dog attack!

Oh, wait, he's pretty friendly, and only wants to sniff crotches. Whew! Close call. Turns out the homeowner, Mark, realized that we were just a couple of palmnuts out in the rain looking to admire his hard work and dedication and soon came out to chat with us.

With Mark's permission we started snapping a few pics...

A good sized Dypsis decipiens flanked the walkway. Mark commented on how stiff the leaves were and how he had to keep them trimmed back so you could walk by. Someday they'll be overhead and make a great tunnel to walk under.

Nice contrast of the green and blue with Brahea decumbens in front.

Paul has some more pics that he's going to post here in this thread and he spoke with Mark for the longest, so I think he has the info on how long it's been in the ground, etc.

We were just in awe...

After a discovery like that the high soon wore off and we headed back into the cold and back to our Corypha-less gardens. It made us feel like this sad Kentia

post-126-0-08749800-1386610611_thumb.jpg

OK, we were stoked, but that's the only thing I could think of for a caption for the leaner Kentia.

Rain rain, my camera is wet. Thanks again Ken for bringing this garden to our attention. And thanks to Mark for being gracious and letting a few uninvited palm nuts look at your garden.

Stay tuned for Paul's pics, which I'm pretty sure include some lunch photos and if you're lucky, The PRA Team in the hot tub photos....and yes, Paul wears Speedos, so I'm sure Rafael will enjoy that.

Matt,

Outstanding thread and coverage! :) And definitely a very impressive Corypha! I'm curious whether Mark or a previous owner planted it. And maybe the focus going forward can be on this Corypha instead of that sad looking Newport Beach coconut... :mrlooney:

I think the Kentia was bowing in reverence to a Corypha in Southern California!!

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

Wow, thanks for posting this Matty!

And I agree with Bo, would love to see this palm be the focus around this area rather than that suffering Cocounut in Huntington Beach!

Looking forward to hearing more information about that Corypha. Never even thought about trying to grow one out here.

I wasted 15 years of gardening to not even attempt a Corpha, I had no idea. I also agree with Bo, we need to replace all sad Newport Beach Coconut posts with San Diego Corpha posts. I better plant one this spring.

Wow, guys, you are the real Original PRA Team™ indeed!

What a discovery!

It just blew myself away! Bö is right, this is just as big as the Newport coconut. It's even better in fact, as this specimen looks reasonably happy and healthy!

I just can't believe how much the knowledge of palm hardiness has been improved thanks to this forum.

Many of the species that I once considered as "Not for Mediterranean climes" are in fact possible.

Not all, of course, can make it in the end, but, hey, Corypha, what an achievement! :greenthumb: :greenthumb: :greenthumb: :greenthumb: :greenthumb:

And again, looking fairly good.

This is just as mad as Mike's coconut and Areca catechu in Port Macquarie.

Many thanks for this excellent, educative and nonetheless droll post (Matty, just stay as you are :winkie: )! I love this forum, and I love it even more when it wows like that!!!

I found it was a bit quite some days ago, then Jeff (MrRare) put his santa's suit, and now... now... A californian Corypha.

And it's not even a joke!!!

This is so cooooool...

I have to say, Ken's Corypha looks good. Question is, has his yard ever had a palm society tour it? If not, would this maybe be considered for this next year?
