That's something Californians don't understand - humidity. I don't need AC, but I do have to run a de-humidifier - I think they consume as much juice as AC.

Hard to comprehend the need to run an air conditioner all Summer . Our Summers here are usually 68 - 77 F during the d.ay and around 55 f at night .There are only 2 -3 days per yr that i put the reverse cycle air conditioner onto the cool setting . From October - April we don't use any heating .

Here we will see 4 month on average where the days hit the mid 90s and many nights don't go below 80. Add to that humidity in the 60-90% range, and then my friend you will understand the need for AC all summer long.

I was lucky enough to buy my 14seer AC equipment back when there were rebates on it. Happy to buy because I still think it was one of the best model ranges ever made...

That being said.. I have TWO systems for my house (or will when I am done) one for upstairs, one for down. I "just" moved upstairs to start slowly working on the old part of the house downstairs unimpeded.. So, the AC units have sat still in their boxes for 7 years or so... but the heat wave earlier last month prompted me to finally hook it up.. When I did, I ran it pretty solid for about 10 days at 73-75..

Got my electric bill ........ about 54$ :D bumped it 8-10$ I love high efficiency equipment when I get it at my cost :P

And Bob.. I love AC personally.. and having been born in Florida and visited back there often... unless a continuous sheen of sweat on you for 6 months of the year is appealing, you NEED AC in some places..

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Living in Hawaii with the highest electric rate in the nation, we've learned to conserve. We no longer plug in our palms at night!

One night mid summer FL, come stay with my family, I'll give you a room with no A/C, see how long your last. I'm sure you have heard the saying it's not the heat it's the humidity, well we have both. As Larry pointed out it's pretty much impossible to not have as your house will turn black with mildew.

Its Ok.. we've established that Bob prefers a sheen of all -over sweat to being comfortable... not that theres anything wrong with that. B)

I never said I don't appreciate the benefits of a/c. Millions of people live without it and have for millions of years. And I bet I can outlast and outsweat most anyone on Palmtalk, wanna chat about that too?

U guys need to invest in inverter AC systems

In the last few years I am hearing more ads for them, but they do not seem to be catching on down here. I am not sure of their pros and cons. Perhaps BS Man can weigh in at some point on this topic.
