This morning’s cloud dissipation. Lately I’ve been working when the sun comes up, but my loading dock gets a decent view at times.

 ** Apparently i forgot to hit " submit " when posting these Tuesday.  Fixed **

A pretty wild day for cloud watching.. Before- mentioned cutoff low that brought last night's crazy light show to S. Cal.  ( see the posts over in the " Current Temp " Thread, over in the Wx section ) ..and kept m up until close to 4am  wasn't finished with the " Transition Season " weather show as it headed east.  Barely missed out on the Quarter to golf ball - sized hail that apparently fell just east and north of the Valley. Regardless, haven't seen this kind of fall weather event in quite some time..

Early morning signs it may be a " big storm day " as the last of the overnight showers and storms were headed north into the mountains..

DSC06859.JPG.2d4390df25dbbe5be82909bdbd3b9e5f.JPG

DSC06862.JPG.89631419bcf89d60acf74e6deb077f80.JPG

First storm of the day.. rather " Meh " looking.. Some bolts, Quick burst of heavy rain..
DSC06868.JPG.32e727ec1808742bccc9920b55d8ce1c.JPG

Gone as soon as it came.. White-ish streaks falling from the clouds is good a sign of Hail.
DSC06870.JPG.5cc9934cbb41df48c4cf7c93f6a9cb05.JPG

DSC06877.JPG.83bcb6c43d131beeba0cab580f209f2e.JPG

Example of one factor that kept things in control in this part of the state.. Most storms that passed through town were elevated and had a tough time making a good, sustained connection to the surface until they reached higher terrain.
DSC06881.JPG.56a9041c65c3a6b462f0dceddc06a8a9.JPG

Storm #2.. this one a bit stronger ..and meaner looking.
DSC06882.JPG.8062b5c45c3f702f785c4da13803a2ca.JPG

...So were the Mammatus that formed as it passed.. Almost always a good sign of a severe storm.

Quick to approach, quick to race out of town ( and explode in size and strength..  High country / High deserts north of the Rim got the brunt of today's stronger storms )
DSC06896.JPG.95e3af7c34e37dca42653dd1322d5523.JPG

This year is flying by, but it’s been an outstanding growing season and maybe it’s just because I’ve been posting cloud pics it gives me a reason to look up more often, but great clouds this year as well! Hanging out by the fire pit and snapped these without getting up from my chairE53A4EA6-6386-4AFB-9B37-D335C3A487AC.thumb.jpeg.d391c7c7ed3b2b25a4e4c9ecd41ed6ea.jpegCD895C50-F733-4434-B00E-98737C5488BC.thumb.jpeg.899a0fdb7731b233b401340fcc3d08ea.jpegC563F6A4-22E5-41FA-A59F-6D40799788AA.thumb.jpeg.703bcf39396a61c0505eca8176494275.jpeg

:greenthumb: Very true.. Wasn't sure if i'd even captured it since i was driving and this camera doesn't always like to cooperate when trying to capture images in this situation.. Speed limit in this spot is only 45 so i had a quick chance to look in the rear view and confirm what i'd just seen fly by, lol.

The visual in that pic is stunning. Every subject that makes the picture up is worthy of capturing in its own right. The tunnel, then the volunteer Washingtonia I assume. Then looked up on the hill, if all that isn’t worthy of a shot on its own. Then I realized the whole hillside is spotted with what I assume again are Saguaros. That’s a cool ass place you live. Have to tip my hat to you for capturing that while moving!

Yes, all Saguaro on that hill..

Definitely a gamble trying to get decent pictures while driving ..and a lot of practice.  Slower speed headed up hill, and having enough distance between the entrance to the tunnel and my vantage point approaching it helps.  Got some other pictures from the other side of the tunnel but not happy w/ the quality enough to post ( lots of glare from the interior of the car )  May be heading back there either this weekend, or  Monday  and plan to stop at a couple lookout stops beyond the tunnel..

Was my first trip through this area so i needed to get an idea of the road / where the pull off spots were, etc..  Never been a huge fan of driving narrow roads through mountains and living in essentially flat areas for - seemingly forever-, doesn't help lol-  Gotta get re acquainted though since some of the best places to visit back in CA require navigating narrow roads.

In this case, distance between where you start west of the Tunnel, and where you end up at the top of the canyon is fairly short. Scenery is a bit different though, as you'll see later.

As for the Washingtonia.. was the only one i saw, though there could be more growing in the canyon that parallels the highway nearby. No doubt there are others where the creek rolls through Superior before heading west past Boyce Thompson / the Apache Tears digging area east of the Arboretum i posted about last spring where i found a few..

Some ordinary ..and not so ordinary " Lights in the sky " again, this time close to sunset.

Nearly perfect presentation of " Sun Dogs " Some other faint " Halo- esque " colors in near by clouds as well.

Tangent Arc, somewhat muted by the " dirty" sky / sun position..  Very obvious when viewing in person. When quite bright, the Tangent Arc can look like the sky above the Sun has Eyebrows or the Astrological sign of Taurus.

Faint, but obvious Circumzenithal Arc above the constantly morphing Tangent Arc. For anyone who has a tough time seeing colors, Cz Arc is visible in the top right hand side of the picture ..starting at the upper right corner, and arcing down and to the left, like a smile. Had clouds been thinner between the Arc's position and the setting sun, it could have been brighter.

If X marks the spot..  what about this? Is this a " Go play / you'll win the Lottery today " kind of sign?:mrlooney:   I'm sure there are people would swear it were some sort of signal from Aliens, or a sign of JFK returning from the dead   ..Anyway..  ..Darker "trail" is the shadow created by the Contrail above it upon a deck of thin clouds directly below.

First " interesting Cloud Picts. of 2022 " Courtesy of a very cold ( up top ) but dry and warmer ( at the surface ) Upper Level Low passing south and east of the Valley today..

While what rain fallen has been ..less than a few spits.. barely enough to wet the driveway / sidewalk this evening, dry sub - cloud level at the surface brought down a period of some monsoon like winds as our best opportunity for showers rotated overhead from the southeast about an hour ago..  While i didn't see any, a few of the low- topped " storms " prowling the desert / valley this evening were producing lightning returns ( on enhanced radar ), likely well hidden up in the clouds. Aside from when breezy, not all that cold.  Storm heads for the Big Bend tomorrow.

" Halo effect " produced by taller, Wispy Cumulus in front of precip descending from other Cumulus in front as they decay close to sunset.. Had a lot of this passing overhead through the day.
DSC08917.thumb.JPG.27686af1382368d38bf211389233c06c.JPG

Like someone brought blobs of icy, thick Cirrus much closer to the surface.. Line of Cumulus- like clouds behind / below are an icy form of convection- generated Alto Cumulus Castellanus.
DSC08919.thumb.JPG.f85afb1389aa313480842de2ba97670c.JPG

Uncommon, night time shots of an excellent example of decent precipitation trying to fall through a very dry sub- cloud  layer ( Simply put, the " Sub  Cloud layer refers to the airspace between the bottom of clouds and the surface ) Could be considered a very low form of bubbly Mammatus clouds you'd usually see hanging below the much higher icy Anvil tops of Thunderstorms.  Took awhile but some of the rain did eventually reach the ground ( as sprinkles )
