Colombian Palm Trip

Recommended Posts

I have recently returned from my second trip to Colombia.

I flew into Cali to meet the others and Emilio our guide.

We had originally planned to spend the first 4 days exploring the old Buenaventura Rd but a landslide and rebel ambush(2 police dead) meant we headed straight south to the Amazon basin.

Every thing started off greenpost-7567-0-80816200-1375943487_thumb.jp

Nice! I'm intrigued about the plants that would be growing in that dry region.

Ah, So Geonoma atrovirens ( which means green/black) is back to Macrostachys again, no doubt Arden was the informant :) Whatever its name, its a beauty, a Geonoma Id "love here" is the entire leaf Weberbauri you posted in your travel thread, your Wettinia d pic in post 7 looks very Dictyocaryum. Look fwd to many more pics. Pete :)

Great thread Steve, I know you gave people the opportunity to go with you, these habitat palm finds are better than anything I've seen before on Sth American palms. That Euterpe catinga looks terrific, I'll have some of those. Actually the climate you're in with all those Geonomas etc, can you advise on what may be similar back here in Australia ? Is there some altitude with cool temps involved ? Look forward to more...

Happy Gardening

Cheers,

Wal

Like I have said I used Galeano and Bernal's book as my reference.

I am certainly more agreeing of the lumpers outlook than the splitters.

Weberbaurii is treated as a form of undata which makes sense as you see the variation in person.

That is the tricky thing for me in attempting to put names to photos(don't take it all as gospel) but locality is a great start.

I collected over 10 palms as seed with multiple forms of some so that should be interesting to see any variations that arise from here.

Wal

Most of the Geonomas were from about 1000 - 1500m. Exceptions were the high growing forms (undata etc)

the problem may be the climate variation - either too hot or too dry?

At the end of the day collection is a bonus to me and getting out there is the joy.

Already planning the next trip depending on the outcome of the peace talks in Cuba at the moment.

In 2 years I hope to travel on the roads too dangerous this time. In 12 months things improved so much that we were not stopped by the army for security checks once this trip!

Wal

the strangest thing was the Euterpe catinga is listed for a range way west!

They looked mature so I'm thinking they are around Mocoa at elevation.

Maybe I'll know more next time. Would definitely look for the longer pole pruner for them.

Awesome pictures. I'm looking forward to seeing more from the rest of the trip. Also the area looks very similar to my in-law's ranch in Ecuador on the Pacific side of the Andes. Several of the Geonoma you posted pictures of look familiar to me from the protected forest on the ranch, but I honestly don't know exactly how many are native to that region. The area is ripe for palm exploration.

Steve,

Wow, what an amazing trip and adventure! Really enjoyed the photos, including all the "non-palmy" ones! :) I have tried a few Geonomas here, and they generally do well, but when we have a drier stretch (yeah, it happens even here!) with lower humidity, then they suffer. They're probably in an extremely high humidity environment year round there.

Well in those photos we were in the Putumayo and so are close to Ecuador geographically.

I think if Colombia is not doable where I want to go then Ecuador is the option.

Certainly these palms would range further south

Troy

WE saw 3 distinct forms of linearis.

Seeds 5/10/20mm.

The largest (western form) has well developed stilt roots.

I rated the western form very highly.

Last year this palm puzzled me but now I embrace lumping of variation.

All one species I am sure from this trip.

After leaving San Augustin the plan was to head north where it was safe to continue exploration .

The Central Cordillera was deemed out of bounds unfortunately as I had some areas very rich in collection data.

We decided to detour east down to Florencia as the road again had lots collected on it.

At high altitude was lots of Dictyocaryum and Ceroxylon.

Unfortunately these were all built on now with no forest remnants accessible.
