Hi Bo

The Dypsis you asked about is the one that came in the same time as your orange crush the seeds were identical unless you cut them in half. It is a very slow grower here but I’m sure it would grow a lot faster in your climate.

Clayton.

Clayton,

That's VERY interesting. And that palm is definitely different from "Orange crush". I just took a few photos this morning (for unrelated reasons), so will post a few in a new thread shortly.

Clayton,

Could you give us a little history about you and your place? Like how long have you been working on it? How large is it? Future plans? Have you always worked with plants? With palms?

In other words, I'm just trying to figure out if you are more or less crazy than I am.  :)

Dear DypsisDean,

We have been chippen away at this project for sometime without hired help

Only in the last few years have we been blessed with workers.............hoorah

Our farm is 18 years in easter.

And our stock/project started at another location for a few years before that.

We have seen in a few dogs  :( and a couple of snakes ........our place was quite over grown with groundsel trees as tall as wattles trees 5 meters tall and a thicket of lantan which covered some trees.......like raspberry...we had that too. Quiet a jungle of weed.

We now have 24 acres about 15 acres for the gardens/nursery and 6 acres of grazing land for Teresa's boer goats [ a fire break - our local bush fire brigade are crazy... ] and 3 acres of natural bush land.

Palms and Tropical plants are our passion.

Yes...... we are crazy and mostly likely just as crazy if not more than you.

We are just trying to create the "Utopia" that we started in 1989.

Thanks Teresa

[Clayton's other half]

PS Heaven help us .....Gold Lotto would too. :D ...but there is more to come.

Alot of projects on the go and alot of projects yet to start.

Clayton and Teresa, you have done a lot of work and we get to see the fantastic rewards.  Thanks for the tour and all the knowledge that you have taken the time to share.  I really appreciate it when "professionals" take the time to answer the most mundane questions from us amateurs.

Hi Dean

I hope we don’t win first prize in the crazy stakes! :P   Then again I don’t really mind. :D

We have set up the farm as a seed bank for years to come so most species are not to near to the same species of the same genus this will not stop cross pollination but should slow it down a little anyway we are in it for the long hall, and loving it.

Clayton

Hi Bob

Thank you for the kind words we are only to happy to share our experience with those that might need some help, as we had problems as well and found that its not easy to get the correct information some times.

I hope this forum helps many to get to know these great palms and how easy some are to grow.

All the best.

Clayton.

Hi Mike

Thank you on the offer on those seeds that particular Ptychosperma is a little tropical in its requirements when it is small, maybe if you can grow a few on and I will give a them ago when they are larger might be the best way.

Yes I have not had much of a chance lately to do much fishing or surfing but I hope to soon as the tuna start soon  :P  and we might get some swell as well , list those photos of the dogs if you can I would love to see them.  :)

Hi all.

just arrived home.

When the phone calls came from Daryl, Mike and Wal separately, all saying come and join them at Teresa and Clayton's Utopia, refusing would not have been right :;):    Fortunately there is an airport nearby coinciding with some very discounted fares, As a bonus some friends lived on the other side of the hill from Utopia  so we stayed for a week (and snuck back the next day to Utopia for a few palms for our friends). What may not have been mentioned is much Utopia is on the side of a steep hill. Clayton and Teresa have built 6 klm's of rock walls up the side of it and down ravines as well, themselves!!!!

Clayton and Teresa shared lots of information with us on fertilisers , germination etc The tour of the gardens and huge variety of species was very enjoyable and informative, lots of great vista's,

Pictures to follow

thanks for the invite guys, thank you Teresa and Clayton for your hospitality
