Quebrada Honda - Arenal

I would like to share some photos my brother (geonomaDude) and I took in our trip  :) , in which we were looking for Chamaedorea seed.

First, we went to Barra Honda nearby terrains and Quebrada Honda (a small town). Some meters away from the Barra Honda National Park we found a rattan palm, which we don't know...

We couldn't enter the park, because it closes 4:00 PM and we reached it at 3:50 PM.

Here are some pics:

As we didn't found any mature seed source we decided to go to Cañas and stay there for the night.

At the morning we went to Tilarán and reached Arenal lake.

In the roadsides we found many chamaedorea and astrocaryum.

Here are some pics:

Astrocaruym alatum?

I wasn't expecting to find this kind of palm, so I didn't took scissors nor gloves... :( I tried to pick fruit and got some low injuries with the spines... So I highly recommend to carry gardening equipment :)...

Next time a will carry these stuff, plus boots (muddy water, like a swamp) and something to carry fruits.

Luis,

I have a few photos of palms very similar to the "unknown palm" in photo 3 from my trips to C.R. I think it might be an Iriartea, but I am not sure.

Thanks Gileno and pohonkelapa. I will try to post some more pics soon.

Jake, I think you are right. I compared my photos with others found through some web search... I also found this species grows in the place I took the pictures (Arenal). Here is a page with some info.

Thanks for the pictures Luis.  I like the way you organized them.  Does the Astrocaryum aculeatum grow where you are?

Hi Don,

No Astrocaryum palms grow in Limón, Guanacaste, Puntarenas and some far locations in Alajuela. Here is an attached image.

From this site.

I am planning to go to Tortuguero, and with some luck I will try to pick some seed. This time I will carry gloves and garden equipment. :)
