Spring Trimming in the Cold

Recommended Posts

Not sure the high hit 50 today, and low tonight will be 32, but I had an awesome day of spring cleaning in the gardens. Here is one of renewed scenes. The 3 Phoenix sylvestris palms, only two visible in photo with one just off to the right, got some big hair cuts today. Our little statue named Jasmine WABOHH is now visible again for the first time in several years. And she is sporting a new gazing ball as well, the last one was nailed in Hurricane whatever it was last year or two. I don't even keep track any more. Now I can get under them to clean up and mulch. It was brisk out there l, especially when the wind blew and sun tucked behind a cloud, but heavenly as well.

Hope you had a great day out as well.

PS - Sorry about picture quality, I was working it hard and just pulled out phone for a quick snap.

Beautiful job trimming those trunks. How tall are the palms now? Were the P sylvestris' in your yard during the hurricane? Do understand the previous comments about the dangers of trimming. We've avoided armed palms until now but are picking up a few C humilis soon. Not needles but they do have a mean looking hook to them.

I know what you mean about getting out and enjoying the palms. Spent some time at our palm nursery today and its so rejuvenating to walk around. Our temps keep going up and down teasing that spring is soon here and we've got more rain coming this weekend and next week. Could be worse, my parents said they had snow on the ground today.

Nice sylvestris Keith! I have two, a little smaller. I have a nice extended pole lopper that I use to cut and carry fronds to the curb. One day when they get tall, not sure how that will work. But the bluish color of these is a great contrast to the general green in the garden. Sylvestris must be the most dense crown of any feather palm, makes them even more striking. Looking good!

Always nice to be able to walk under a palm-hope I get there some day!

You will Jim. It will be fun to see your three story plastic covered wire mesh structure blanketed in snow in the middle of January!

Yes, nice color on those...they are at a size now where they will really take off....will be well overhead in a couple of years. I love sylvestris.

Looks nice Keith. Your posts are more interesting now that I've seen your garden in person. Im looking forward to seeing your new plantings grow over the years.

It has been awhile and I need a good excuse to do some cleaning up out there.   It may be a while though as we went from drought and burn ban conditions to torrential rains.  There was localized flooding in many areas when I left yesterday morning.  In Louisiana we have 2 states of rain, praying for it to start, praying for it to stop.

Keith!

Yes, I am back on the radar again.   Had an unexpected job change 6 weeks ago.   Just coming back up for air.   Hmm, when is first day of winter.   As I recall, I said if I don't get them by fall, they are yours again.  I usually make to my destination on these deals, but at Mounts Botanical Garden are 3 Licuala one time when I didn't.   Josh didn't feel good about reselling them, so we agreed on a donation, lol.

Kieth,

They're still yours, no major rush.  Hope the job change went smooth.

Well, after 2 years on the program as a recovering CIO, I fell off wagon.  I try to get out but they drag me back in.
