Nice palm and human interest photos.  Looks as though a good time was had by all.  Paul, it looks as though you guys know how to have a good time, without taking everything too seriously!

I love this thread!  It's too bad I wasn't able to be more active when I belonged to the SoCal Palm Society chapter.  It's great that there is so much enthusiasm and participation there.  I would have liked to have attended the Pritchardia lecture as well since my line of study is in Hawaiian native plants.  After reading the Hana Hou article on the Big Island Palm crusaders I fancy myself a "wanna-be HIPSter" only because I am on O`ahu and I can't be a real one.

Jacob,

YES, you can be a real HIPS-ter!! $8 annual membership is certainly reasonable. And there are some pretty competitive airline rates now between Honolulu and Hilo! And if you come over on Friday afternoon (Feb 2nd), HIPS has its big annual event. See the other sub-forum for more info. And you would meet plenty of HIPS-ters!! And then you could spend Saturday visiting gardens! (HIPS has a number of members "off island").

The caroyata like foliage on the rattan could be a Korthalsia spp.

Zac,

Unfortunately no journal! You'll be informed, via postcard or a full page one sheet of paper, of upcoming events. Plus (sometimes) free refreshments at HIPS events. The BBQ this Friday however is a dinner, so that's an additional $8 per member. Still very reasonable. Last year I believe we had 148 participants for the BBQ. Considerably more than the PSSC event in SoCal. And they have MANY more members!!
