Are you suffering from Climate Grief?

Xerarch

Recommended Posts

Climate Grief: A human psychological condition wherein a person suffers emotional distress caused by the inability of local climatic conditions to grow desired plant species. These species usually include palms or other plants of a tropical nature, therefore, a person living in Hawaii would have very little reason to suffer from climate grief. Most poor saps on PalmTalk suffer at least minor symptoms.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to: agitation, stress, and sleepless nights during a cold event; repeated, compulsive buying of palms that are known not to thrive in the local climate; spending large amounts of resources and time attempting to protect non-adapted species, and perhaps longing for a new fairy-tale-like location where all your horticulture related dreams may come true. Even the normally climate blissful people in So Cal may be feeling some grief this weekend.

I often experience a form of this living in Central Florida. Granted, we have many beautiful palm (and other flora of all kinds) species that will grow well in my area. My taste in palms is primarily the tropical rain forest type palms which tend to do best in the humid tropics and frost free subtropics, whereas I prefer a climate like New England for my own comfort. Sometimes I feel I should either move to Hawaii (or maybe Coastal SE Florida) or up north and get a greenhouse.

Before we get slapped back to reality, I'm going to enjoy the antonyms for a little while. B)

The difference is Climate Grief is a known condition but Climate Bliss is fictional. There's always something you can't grow.

I have Climate Grief real bad. Could require hospitalization or at least a trip to Florida.... Zone Denial is also one of the real bad symptoms. What do you call it when a person is basically out of touch with reality?
