Harry Luther

It was with surprise and dismay that I read on Planet Bromeliad this morning that Harry Luther has passed away.

I never met him, but his name is well known to any avid grower of bromeliads. Condolences to his family.

I was privileged to meet him once.... A nice guy and lots of knowledge.... RIP Harry. The bromeliad world wouldn't be the same without him.

Truly tragic to hear this. I never met Harry and as I am only just now beginning to learn more about bromeliads I am also only just now realizing what a legend Harry was in his own lifetime in the world of bromeliads and he will certainly be missed. And what a coincidence since Kim and I had the privilege of visiting Gardens by the Bay in Singapore only a little more than a month ago. We were simply astounded by the display of what seemed to be millions of bromeliads. Here are a few on a man-made 40 meter tall "mountain" (and this is only the top of it).

It was a loss to Shelby Gardens when Harry left and went to Singapore. With his death, it is a loss to the world.

Here is a post made by Chester Skotak earlier today on facebook .

I am certain he would not mind me sharing it here .

• To Whom It May Concern:

Harry Luther was my good friend of over 30 years. His untimely death left a deep void in our botanical world. I would not feel right without setting the record straight. I know Harry would want me to speak up…so I will. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens wants to establish a memorial fund in Harry Luther’s memory? This is a sad and hypocritical idea. What will they do with the money? I will quote from a heartfelt tribute posted today that I agree with 100%. In fact Harry told me many times about his ordeals at Selby. The garden had become a tourist trap and was a living hell for him. They pushed him out PERIOD! Now they portray themselves as a reputable botanical institution looking to make a buck off of Harry Luther’s death.

“He (Harry Luther) did truly dedicate his life to his work and spared no effort in elevating Selby Gardens to its status as a world class scientific institution. Of course this also later came to break Harry’s heart when Selby changed course and began to abandon the science in favor of becoming more of a park and wedding chapel. Harry’s last days there were sheer torture as they did everything they could to drive him out. It was a shameful chapter in Selby history and one that I think has fatally damaged their reputation.”

I strongly advise NOT to donate ANY money to Selby. They drove Harry Luther out. Selby is not interested in Bromeliads. They are interested in money. Do not be fooled by this memorial fund plea lacking details about how the money will be spent to honor Harry Luther. It could easily turn out to be a scam.

Respectfully ,

Chester Skotak

Amen. Times change but Harry changed little. Admired and now missed by all.
