Random Thai Biennial shots

bgl

Recommended Posts

I have a lot of random shots that don't really belong in any of the other threads (Faces, for instance), so I'll be adding them in this thread. A few now and then when I have time. Feel free to add whatever you might have, and in no particular order, even though these five happen to have been taken the very first morning (Wednesday September 12), as we were leaving the Grand Four Wings Hotel in Bangkok.

I'd like to know the answer to that question too! I had on a pair of very very sturdy Sorel rubber rain boots and they were still able to inch their way, rather rapidly, up the surface so the socks felt like practically an afterthought...

One image I have to share here, not specifically the Biennial, but a familiar sight for anyone who flew in or out of Bangkok. Some nice airport architecture and green space at Suvarnabhumi Airport...

Thanks Annika,

To be honest there was one more pic posted somewhere in Thai tour treads where everybody in shadhouses are wearing HATS???

That one had no sence to me either , but, is there a sence after all lol?

In my opinion, the leech socks were very helpful. The leeches were TINY and since they were dark, they were difficult to see against a dark background, like a dark shoe or sock. Against the white background that the leech socks provided they were easy to find and get rid off. And as far as the hats - most people probably felt it was easier to keep the hats on since we were in and out of the shadehouse and between the buses and simply walking around out in the open. Here are a few more photos - on our way from Khao Yai National Park to Tawa Ravadee Hotel and then upon leaving the next morning. Annika with our driver (in Bus #2) and guide, Sam.

Thursday morning September 13 we drove from Tawa Ravadee Hotel to Tub Larn National Park, which has a wild population of several hundred Corypha lecomtei. A few people got slightly carried away... :mrlooney: (And some made it WAY up into those Coryphas - others may have better pictures).

After everybody was safely back on the buses we headed to Nong Nooch Garden 2, which is an enormous nursery operation. We ended driving around inside the nursery for a good 20 minutes with all seven buses, and of course still with police escort! And after that it was time for an outstanding lunch. :) Photo #4 shows a Nong Nooch crew potting up Cyrtistachys seedlings. In photo #5, Annika and Kim with a handful of the numerous (and I mean NUMEROUS) Borassus flabellifer.

After lunch our seven buses left on the three hour drive to the main Nong Nooch #1 garden outside of Pattaya. At this point, we had TWO police cars in front of our bus caravan, and I couldn't resist getting a photo with a few of the officers during a stop we made on our way. :) In photo #2 - music with dance in the aisle!

Thanks Daryl! :) Here are a few more. This is from our first morning at Nong Nooch when we basically drove through the nursery part (which is enormous) - bromeliad house, row of Coryphas (lecomtei I believe), Hyphaene, Borassus flabellifer, the city of Pattaya in the distance and the final photo during our first refreshment break that morning.

A new world record was set.....and on C. lecomtei to boot! I was just amazed looking at these beauties. And I think I was told that this was the last remaining lecomtei's in habitat. Some 40 something only in total.

Wal, I believe that's correct (and minor detail - that would be Alcantarea odorata)

And more random shots. This is from Sunday morning, September 16th, as the group wandered around the main Palms of the World area in a light drizzle

1 - good thing Nong Nooch has lots of umbrellas!

2 - Jack was busy! :)

3 - if I recall correctly, this palm was tagged as a Dypsis decipiens. I believe most of us disagreed

4 - another Dypsis...help me out! :bemused:

5 - Hey, there's Bill - I am sure he knows! :mrlooney: And maybe Gileno as well?

As the staff was trying to get all 208 participants together in one place (did I hear someone say it was like herding cats? ), for a group photo, birthday presents were handed out to a number of people.

1 - Here's Felix from Mexico being polite with an elephant (ALWAYS a good idea! :mrlooney: )

2 - can't ever have too many elephants...

3 - for those who weren't there - this will give you an idea of the service that was provided to the group at all times. Staff was ALL over the place!

4 - as we were waiting for the group photo to be taken! :)

We were taken to interesting places. I am guessing not too many Nong Nooch visitors are taken on buses through this stream to check out a bunch of Metroxylons! :) And next is John Dransfield and Scott Zona, with (appropriately) Dransfieldii micrantha. The morning ended at one of the Nong Nooch restaurants with a great lunch! :)

More when I have time. And others - feel free to add whatever you may have!

OK, here goes - a few more...Sunday afternoon (Sept. 16th) we visited Hortus Botanicus. WHAT a place! Walking down ANY of these aisles was an jawdropping experience and I only captured a few of the palms there. Here's: Manicaria saccifera, Johannesteijamannis perakensis, Kerriodoxa elegans, Licuala peltata var. sumawongii and if you need any Carpoxylon macrospermum - well, THIS would be the place! :)

Yeah, I KNOW - I should have taken many more photos there! It was just overwhelming. So, on to the next day, and our final day at Nong Nooch. Monday September 17th began with a cultural show. Thai dance and a bunch of eleptants sprinkled in here and there. And no, this was NOT the elephant show!
