Howdyall:

The Palm Society of Southern California will have its September 22, 2012 meeting at a spectacular home and garden in Holmby Hills in Los Angeles – that belonging to Drew Zager. It’s located at 111 South Mapleton, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

Mr. Zager is the son of Bud Zager, a PSSC Board Member. In addition to great taste in dads, he also has magnificent taste in home and garden. The garden is on 1 + acre in Holmby Hills, right up the street from Bel Air, UCLA, and a lot of other famous places, including the Playboy Mansion.

And, best of all, it’s in one of the finest Sunset Garden ™ Zone 23 climates around, an air-drained slope, with ocean influence, but far enough from the beach for plenty of summer heat without the horrors of the desert. That means Mr. Zager can and does grow some palms many of us can only dream about, including a spectacular colonnade of line of towering Roystonea oleracea. There are many other splendid palms, also including some enormous Caryota gigas out in front. Ever wonder what a group of those would look like? Come to the meeting and find out!

This meeting will feature a garden tour, lots of schmoozing and a potluck lunch with meat course provided. You can bring anything you like to eat to share. Not sure what to bring? If you like it, we’ll like it too.

There will also be an auction of palms. Anyone may bring plants for the auction, though we ask that you abide by the following guidelines for best results: (i) plants in 1 - 5 gallon pots are best (big ones are too hard to carry); and (ii) rare palms, please, no Phoenix canariensis, etc.

SATURDAY ITINERARY

- PSSC Board meeting, 9:30 a.m.

- Tour Mr. Zager’s garden all its glory, 11:00 a.m.

- Poolside Potluck Lunch Begins 12:00

- General Meeting and Plant Sale, 1:15 p.m.

DIRECTIONS

From North or South on the I-405 Freeway:

Exit Sunset Blvd; Go east, towards UCLA, then proceed past UCLA on Sunset about half a mile.

Turn right on the first street after Beverly Glen which will put you on Mapleton Drive. Drew's house is on the corner of Sunset and Mapleton. It's the house with the warm dark-honey-colored teak exterior and the Caryotas out front . . .

PLEASE PARK ONLY ON THE RIGHT (WEST) SIDE OF THE STREET

See you there!

If you have questions, you can PM me.

P.S. -- YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A MEMBER TO ATTEND! If you want to come, just come on over and join the fun.
