Traveling The World

Recommended Posts

I was recently looking over some pictures of the most recent biennial in the Dom. Republic. Which then led me to start thinking what other countries I have been to. I thought it would be fun and very interesting to see where everyone has been to over the years. List all the countries, for what ever reason you were there. Lay-overs without getting out of the airport dosen't count. Pilots, flight attendants, company salesman/woman, palm collectors, what ever.

 My list is the following;

 Costa Rica (5)

 Ecuador

 Dominican Republic

 Peru

 Bahamas (3)

 Mexico (2)

 Madagascar  (2)

 Bali, Indonesia

 Singapore

 Borneo

 Tahiti

Jeff,

Hmm, interesting! But if we don't have palm photos shouldn't this be in the Palapa? I guess our moderator will decide!

And Paul,

Arizo-nuh? This could get interesting... :D  (or was that one of your lay-overs??).

Anyway, I'll give it a shot and test my feeble memory... :P

Sweden (OK, I was born there, so I'm not sure if I can technically include that..!?)

Denmark

Norway

Finland

Iceland

Germany

East Germany (well, it WAS an independent country at the time of my visit!)

Czechoslovakia (another defunct country)

Netherlands

Belgium

Luxembourg

France

Monaco

Great Britain

Ireland

Hong Kong

Australia

New Zealand

Fiji

New Caledonia

Vanuatu

Western Samoa (now just 'Samoa')

American Samoa

Colombia

Venezuela

Barbados

Cayman Islands

Dominican Republic

Trinidad

Mexico

Canada

And just because Paul added Arizo-nuh, I'm adding Spitsbergen - a non-militarized group of islands, governed by Norway, 700-800 miles from the North Pole, with the world's northernmost commercial airport. And no, they don't have any palms. Heck, they don't even have trees, since the ground is frozen 12 months of the year!

Having just had what may prove to be the longest list on this thread, I will add mine, which may prove to be the shortest.

Belgium

The Netherlands

France

Spain

Germany

St. Lucia

I don't suppose I can get away with adding Scotland & Wales, what with them both being part of the UK.

Hopefully I'll be able to add another place in April, although it may end up being Tenerife, which strictly speaking is Spain again.

Great topic!

Most of my international trips, ex Caribbean, have all been for business and my coworkers always look at me strange while I'm taking photos of the local palms.

Singapore = a palm paradise, my 2003 trip is what started the obsession

Bangalore & Delhi, India = many varieties

Paris & Grenoble, France = palms for sale in a Paris nursery, south of France had Trachys and Washies

Geneva, Switzerland = ok, so I didn't see any palms here

Munich, Germany = ditto, except for that weird, indoor beach volleyball place

Antalya, Turkey = coastal town had plenty of Washies and date palms

Sao Paulo, Brazil = many varieties

Buenos Aires, Argentina = ditto

Bo,

Your list is quite extensive to say the least. Was some of these visits job related? At 49 years young, I feel I have many more years to travel. Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Cuba, Cambodia, Vietinam, and some of the European countries are at the top of my list.

Gileano,

Your photo of you at the beach, is without a doubt, most beautiful!!

Jeff,

Only TWO of those countries were job related: Barbados and Trinidad. Everything else was vacation.

Back in the early & mid 70s I worked for a small airline brokerage firm in Sweden, and we represented a few airlines. One of those airlines was International Caribbean Airways of Barbados (long gone!!), so we were selling tickets in Scandinavia to people who wanted to go to Barbados (and beyond). I went to Barbados to get a feel for what the place was like, and check out the hotels that we were recommending to people. And while in Barbados I also happened to meet Karolyn, my wife, who was visiting from New York (well, she wasn't my wife at the time! :D ). So my ONLY business trip abroad resulted in a major change in my personal life (since that was what made me eventually move to the USA). Oh, and Trinidad: made a 24 hour side trip while i was in Barbados.

Bo-Göran

Edit: and Jeff, yes, at 49 you still have a LOT of places to visit!! I could say the same even though I'm 14 years older, but I actually lost most of my interest in travelling after moving to Hawaii! Why go any place when you live in such a great place!!?? (And that's truly how I feel). But that being said, I WILL attend future Biennals and I also intend to continue to make my annual trip to Sweden to visit family & friends.
