''GARDENS BY THE BAY'' SINGAPORE

Pedro 65

Recommended Posts

Last week after 2 weeks in Phuket Thailand for rest, relaxation and recovery we headed to Singapore for 4 days.

2 of the 4 days I spent at the recently opened "Gardens By The Bay", I enjoyed this remarkable, stunning creation so much more than I anticipated, I will for sure travel back in a few years to marvel at the growth of all the newly planted palms and to stare and enjoy the well over ONE MILLION Bromeliads that are everywhere.

There are around 10 massive Tree like steel structures that have Bromeliads attached all over them. Two of these structures are connected by a Sky Walk to each other, I would guess these walkways are easy 40 meters high, its an "Awesome" walk. At night the Tree like structures light up. Cassandra and Shakira are in a pic at the entrance to the base of 1 structure to get a lift to the top.

Pete,

Definitely great to hear that your recovery is proceeding so well that you're able to travel. :) Gardens by The Bay certainly sounds like an amazing place, and it's on the travel plans in connection with the Biennial in September. Definitely looking forward to the sight of millions of bromeliads! And palms! Thanks for posting, and glad to hear it was such a great trip for you and the family! :)

These pics are inside the "Cloud Forest" dome, which is packed with anthuriums, begonias, broms, orchids and many more cloud forest plants. The walkways and waterfalls are stunning.

Great photographs Pedro!

I thought I might have the honor of making the first pic post on the Gardens but you beat me to it!

I am living here in Singapore, as some of you know and I have been hanging back ,waiting on the crowds to subside a little or go on a Monday . I work 6 days a week so its difficult to get over there.....I just got inspired to take a mental health day and get to it!

As Paulgila said - "off the hook!"

Thanks Again....

BTW- if anyone is coming to SG and need information, let me know........I'm not an expert on the city, but i'll try to help.

Heres a few pics of "Incredible Petrified Wood" and a Livistona from Malaysia with Orange petioles.

Not sure if the pic of Cass and Shakira with the Marina Bay Sands Casino made it before. Also a pic of New Guinea carvings and a croc carving..

I will add more soon, hope you enjoyed the pics as much as we enjoyed our 2 days there, oh, I forgot to mention there is tons of "fantastic luscious eateries as well which is needed for the many hours in the days spent there.

Thanks for the comments Bo, Paul and Tom, enjoy all the added pics.Pete

Many years ago when I went to the Getty museum in LA for the first time. I thought that it was freaking genius how someone had come up with the idea of doing these mushroomed shaped sculptures out of re-bar and planting bougenvelia in the middle of them so when they grew out, it would look like this giant colorful plant or flower.

IF that was genius, I have no idea how to categorize what I just saw in these pictures.........

Thanks Kim, we all had a fun time, its a pleasure to post the pix, what great fun and ideas you and Bo will have.

Manny the massive Tree like structures are actually where all the hot air escapes after the huge volumes of garden trimmings from all over Singapore are 1st burnt and turned into energy so the "whole Gardens By The Bay" has "Free Power" Yes a Genius Idea indeed as it would cost "very much" to power the 2 Massive Domes alone. Heres a few more pics of these mighty structures, a few of the many many small Broad leafed Licualas planted and a Aiphanes minima.

WelderTom, Happy Birthday and feel free to add your pics here when you go to "Gardens by the Bay" next..Pete

Thanks Tim, Yes Singapore is Magnificent , full of Beautiful Trees, Palms, Lawns , Orchids , ReForresting , and all very well maintained. Did you know about how "Gardens By The Bay" makes it own power as I wrote above? So Much Yummy Food, and So Much to "see and do", no wonder so many people from "all over the world" live and work in Singapore.

Heres a few more pics, the shot of Shakira near the Joey is actually at the Bot G..The pic with the trucks near the base of one of the Structures shows some of the 3 large triangular areas full of recently planted Joeys, Licualas and caryotas that are a little yellow but will soon green.

The Croton pic is a croton that caught my eye,its nearly black..

Pete,

Mindboggling place and fantastic photos! Kim and I will in all likelihood be on palm and bromeliad overload even before getting to the "Main Event" - the Biennial! :o And Shakira makes a great "palm model"! And I look forward to seeing those Joeys at the Botanical Garden again - it's been a few years and they were impressive then! :) Thanks again for all these photos!

Thanks Nate, this Billion dollar project houses 80% of the "worlds sp of plants".. Thats a Huge WOW..I was very very impressed and happy that in the "Cloud forest" dome they Made An Excellent Statement About Why All The Highland Ancient Cloud Forests World Wide Are Being Destroyed.....Companies Clearing,Cutting And Stealing the Valuable Timber To make Millions While they Plant Oil Palm Plantations..Oil Palm plantation companies have" more than enough" of already cleared degraded available lands to plant oil palms , but they pay governments and politicians worldwide to allow them in to clear Huge vasts of rainforest with VERY Valuable timber...these companies are "Evil"

Hey Pete, would you know what Licuala that is in post # 6, there are about 3 or 4 photos of it.

Wal, the top 2 Licualas in post 6 where L Paludosa, the other 2 didnt have tags but where different. There was so many "similar but different" Licualas planted.. All this section of the Licuala Garden was still being planted at a fast rate by gardeners, Im keen when I revisit in a few years to see them all with their names.( most had a little tape with a number so no doubt later the names will be added)..There where many more Licualas that I wanted to photograph but my camera was dead late in the day and it was our last day there, I look fwd to my next revisit, the growth in another 2 years will be "phenomenal"..

The pics of these Licualas are a full grown Lic tryphylla(o97jpg) and the other is a small Licuala I looked and looked at many hoping to find a name but to "no avail" :( ( the leaflets where thick like a joey, my thoughts are Licuala bintulensis?)

People wanting the answer on "why all tropical cloud forests ( mainly PNG, Malaysia and Indonesia) are being destroyed , I wrote on post 27.

Dennis Cathcart of Tropiflora gave a presentation on the Gardens last night. Very impressive, though the plantings are obviously very freshly installed, and it'll take some time to see how things work out.

Kind of crazy to see so many tropical American bromeliads (even Spanish moss) in the old world. Also, a Cuban brown anole. Looks like they have some pitcher plants and pinguiculas from the southeastern US.

It's certain that nothing similar will be created in the US anytime soon.
