Pritchardia remota

Recommended Posts

Geoff

2' tall seedling, planted very close to 'weather station' showed severe burning on all leaves despite minimal overhead protection from a now dead Archontophoenix purpurea, from frostless 5 hours of 27F... Pritchardia lanaiensis just 3' away seerely damaged (though took an entire week to show it) with the same amount of overhead protection.... however that one has a good chance of survival..   The P remota is very unlikely to survive.

Small specimen, 24" tall (.66 m) under the shelter of a nearby shrub, no damage after 4 days of 28-29 F (-1 C).

I lost a 5-gallon remota in December 2011 to a mild radiation frost (air was probably 35F but frost formed on leaves) but mostly because of cold, wet soil and air temperatures consistently below 55F day / 43F night. Carica X 'Babaco' defoliated but regrew vigorously. Loulu was toast.
