The tropics...in Omaha, Nebraska???!

Obviously, the Newport Coconut is just the tip of the iceberg. I guess it's possible to grow palms anywhere.

My apologies for the picture quality. The photographer (and I use the title loosely) is clearly pretty bad and used a basic point and shoot. But you get the idea...

Wow it looks so natural like the forests around my house (that aroid is everywhere here useful as an umbrella), very well done, it wasnt till I had seen the last shot with the roofing, I would've thought this was in the wild. The dark and the scatterings of seedlings and juvenile palms is so effective.

Rattan seed broadcast also look good for this purpose, if anyone likes the wild look. Small self seeding palms are good too, like Chamaedorea species, their seedlings are also very nice.

It is the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. The exhibit is the Lied Jungle. Don't know if it is still the case, but at one time this had the distinction of being the world's largest indoor tropical rain forest. The place is HUGE and really amazing. It is a fun experience to go during winter. You walk in the door and it's like being teleported to a rain forest.

I remember way back when that the National Aquarium in Baltimore MD had a rain forest exhibit, and although probably smaller it was a climatic jolt that lingered.

Thanks so much for the pics..must be spectacular in person!!!

While I no longer live there, I am originally from Omaha, NE, and my whole family is still there. I have seen this exhibit, and it is pretty incredible.

So, went to the Omaha Zoo today with my Sister's family, and spend a bit of time in the Lied Jungle. I've tried to get a couple shots of most of the palms they have in the place, but also any interesting tropicals they have in there. The Lied Jungle is 20 years old this April and has had many of the large plants/trees growing since. It is 80 feet tall inside at its highest point and covers 1.5 acres. There are several true trees (as opposed to the fake "trees" that are columns holding the roof up) that are up to the ceiling at this point. Many of the others are well over 40 feet tall at this point. The amount of growth that has occurred in the Jungle is amazing since I went as a teenager in '92. Please feel free to ID any of these, as I'm still a n00b at this and just interested in documenting the photos.

Same Species?

imag2256.jpg

Hard to pick out just one, they do get dense in places in there.

Caught a view of the staging area. I think they're getting ready to fill in some bare spots before the season picks up in the Spring.
