Even though had one of these totally defoliate year after year in Thousand Oaks, where it would routinely get down to 27F, it always came back fine.  This year have a 4' tall split seedling in a raised bed with slight protection from a slatted wood awning nearby showed no damage to temps 27F for 5 hours.

I had 2 nights at 25F,5mph wind,8 hours exposure to minimum both nights,no frost,no protection. This is another one where you can't see the leaves freezing but when it thawed out the first morning,I knew it was totally defoliated. Will be surprised if this one comes back as even unopened spears are brown and soft all the way into the trunk.
