What Caught Your Eye Today

These caught my eye the other day while I was in the rain forest looking for seeds.

The following three photos look like some kind of entire leaf Bactris. The leaves are long and narrow and the trunks have spines.

Till i do , the following pics contain My little daughter hugging Ampasindavae...a shot of Bentinckia and Loxococcus leaf similarity... A neat thin grouped leaflet Ptychosperma sp..... A fruiting Ptychosperma hybrid waitianum or Nicolai. ( anyone want seed of this? )...and a night shot of a new 2mtr leaf of Astrocaryum alatum.

Great photos everyone! Oh, all I do is click on the name my computer automatically uses (or there is a rename button on my computer) and add the Latin name before the name the computer has used. My computer "objects" if I delete its chosen name, but is fine with adding additional words. PICASA3 (FREE) will alphabetize them if I put them in a folder and will resize the batch by doing an export (button at the bottom of their site)and make them about 800 pixels which seems pretty good for Palmtalk and emails. That way I don't have to resize each photo. The same export/resize button on PICASA can send the folder to my desktop so even easier to find. It does take a bit of time to label all those photos, but the "voice memo" option on my new camera lets me read the name off the label when I take the photo. Then I pick a time when the weather is cold and rainy and transfer the voice memo to the computer. My teenagers would be amused that I gave any computer advice, but I'm trying to learn.

I saw this thread in the beginning... but missed keeping updated.. ! GREAT rainy weather read.. (So no time to look at it soon here in So Cal)

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

"The great workman of nature is time."   ,  "Genius is nothing but a great aptitude for patience."

-George-Louis Leclerc de Buffon-

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Got back from a few days away and happened to come across a new red frond! Dypsis sp. 'dark mealy bug' bustin out it's first frond in the ground. Picked this guy up from palms for brisbane and it hasn't skipped a beat. Enjoying our wet/warmish winter. Anyway, here's the pics...

Looking up past a Laccospadix australasica who also had some red on show. I'm definetely thinking this guy is planted way to close to a Elaeocarpus reticulatus. That's for future NApalm to worry about.....

Nice NApalm, glad to see its goin well for you!! They are a pretty easy palm to grow. If its to close to that tree that's easily solved... remove the dicot. Wink wink
