Ti's for color

Bill I just noticed that the fourth one you posted as Peter Buck but it looks slightly different than our Peter Bucks. I think what you have there is what people call Rooster Tail.

Peter Buck I think has wider leaves and have a touch of gold color on them along with a hint of green. :) I could be wrong...

A five foot person included for scale

Peter buck here is dark red..... . BIG juno leaves...

According to "the book" Peter Buck is an "orange ti" I would say it is reddish pink with gold overtones (same difference!) A man named Gerrit Wilder brought orange tis from to Tahiti to the Hawaiian Islands and named it "Kauka Wilder" then later Sir Peter Buck brought more of the same plant from Tahiti to Hawaii and somehow it became known as "Peter Buck"

I have one that looks exactly like what the cordyline society calls "Maize" and it looks nothing like our rooster tail... I guess it is actually called "Rooster's Tail" (or red rooster tail!)

I hate cordyline names... they are so inconsistent. In Dr. Brown's book ("the book") he describes "Floppy" as being "blackish green!!!"

Seriously I think there are only a few names that everyone agrees with.... feel free to add some if I've missed any....

Miss Andrea (although some people call it chocolate which Jeff says is completely wrong)

New Guinea Black

McIrney's Spear

Rachel's Gold

O'ahu Rainbow

Peter Buck (on the cordyline society's site it shows an orangy ti)

Pele's Smoke

Bangkok Rainbow

Pink Diamond

John Cummins

Kiwi

Willi's Gold

That's all the "standardized" names I can think of this hour of the morning!

Ti names drive me crazy

Bill, have you seen this site? http://wonderfulorchids.com/Cordyline.html

They are growers on the Big Island so I find this page helpful for IDing tis grown here.

I think Andrew is right... the black one looks like Vanuatu (on the site). (also there is a good comparison of Red Rooster Tail and Peter Buck)

I thought McInerny's Spear was also the same as Hawaiian Flag in some regions.

McIrney's Spear always has the red/pink striping in the middle of its narrow leaf and Hawaiian flag has a wider leaf with red/pink striping beyond the middle part.... er.... that's how I understood it!

Angela, You are right, I would like to see a Ti online reference. Maybe we can get one going on the Palmpedia WIKI. Pictures with cross referenced region names. I believe that it would be a great reference point and there are alot of pics already posted on the Ti plant thread on Palmpedia to get started with.

I think this first one is tricolor.... then the next one is similar but smaller and the leaves are curlier than the first (so it isn't the same).

The third one is McIrney's Spear... its leaves are narrow. The fourth one looks similar to those I've seen on websites as "Hawaiian Flag"

#5 & 6 are New Guinea

#7 was sold as "Samoa"

Our tis look like junk because some bugs have been attacking them.

That's a great idea... to cross reference all the names! That would be a fun project.

My frustration with all the names is another reason why I'm growing my own... so I can name them whatever I want because they won't be exactly genetically the same as any others!!!

LOL me too... I'm totally with you on that one!! Even temperature changes their color.... ours vary throughout the year and look slightly different than others of the same kind growing in hotter temps.

I think crotons are way worse!! I only bother to know a couple of names and that's it!

Angela, J. Searle says Big Red is really Dr. Brown. Here is the plant I purchased as Big Red. I agree with Jeff after looking at the ICS site.
