No visible damage at 29 on Sat AM. No frost. Both palms have about 1 foot of trunk each.

Got down to 26.5F one night and several nights in the upper 20s. No damage what so ever on shaded or fully exposed Kentias. Largest one has 4 feet of clear trunk. Funny thing is that last March we had one night at 32F with lots of frost that did some minor damage but this "dry" hard freeze hasn't done any.

Jim,

I think frost is more damaging to  alot of crown shafted palms that absolute cold temps.

I realize that at a certain point absolute cold temps would have greater impact than frost,but frost on a lot of palms can really do some damage.

IMHO that is why I think that information  should be included in these observations, if it is known whether or not frost was involved!

I was about to post the same thing.

Frost at 35F seems able to do more damage to some palms that no frost and 25F!

mine saw 29 and has minor cold damage but take into account the sun damage that 115 temps and dry sant anas and it looks worse than it is.  Plant is ok however.  No frost whatsover on any of my plants, way to dry for any frost

28F two nights, about to trunk, no damage noted.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

30-35 plants all planted in 2006. Seedlings to 10 gallon. All out in open-no canopy. 32 degrees was bottom. No frost, no damage.

Big specimen, about to form trunk, about 6-7 feet tall, some damage after four nights of 28-29 F.

Adult palm about 14' tall planted as a street palm, against a building in San Fernando ?Valley, but with crown of palm just above roof- was about 26F for several hours in this area and palm has not a hint of green left... wouldn't be surprised if it's dead...

My seedlings about 5' tall overall against a building and suffered for 5 hours at 27F have lost about half their leaves- ones touching building seem mostly OK.  Spikes OK.

Here's a baby in a pot.

Exposed to three nights of 24.8, and a consecutive night down to 27. F, no frost.

Not as bad as I feared . . . .

Hey Guys... Its not the frost doing the damage...its the cold temps.

Plants not under a canopy can be as much as 10 degrees colder due to the exposure to the clear sky.

The leaf surface will drop to below the outside air temps do to radiational cooling. Remember ice forms at 32f...

After a few weeks for "real" damage to show up, there's still no damage to fully shaded Kentias but exposed ones now show 50 to 75% leaf burn. I think it will take as much as acouple of years to fully replace damaged leaves.

I've given up on these here.

Was warned by Jeff in Modesto a while back to forget it - he was right.

I've tried several times and they just get clobbered every winter.

I'm down to one barely hanging on.

Had low of 20F this January.

They look great inside and that's where they should stay here.

2 of my 3 Howeas got spear pull.

Lowest temp they saw was 24f. They were potted and under a deck with no visible damage but the cold got 2 of them.

1/3 still made it, so far.
