Wow , Tew - that's impressive! Where do you keep them? A room for the plants? Or a sunroom or something? I'd love to see pics!

Well I'm probably the ONLY living American without a digital camera or the knowledge of how to post pictures on the internet !!! I live next door to a school. The house has two spare large bedrooms rooms that I convert to "plant rooms" in the late fall. Each room has 12 ft. ceilings so space is not much of a problem. I am lucky that the school alllows me to get kids to help lift/drag all the pots in or out twice a year. As you can imagine, that is a HUGE help. What used to take me hours takes the kids 30 minutes, if even!!! The palms weather well over the winter in the two rooms with large west facing windows. Heat is kept at a minimum so I do have to be careful not to overwater. I use a systemic for pest control. Biggest intruder = mealy bug! I use the halide light over the indoor garden that houses a fountain and the "inside" listed palms. If you are ever in the Baltimore area, you are always welcome to visit!

Jude,

The sunroom is the metalhalide lighting. If you can grow corals, it will be very good lighting for less demanding plants. Something can be learned here... The proper lighting matters indoors for many species of plants. Home depot strip lights do not have balanced(in wavelength distribution) or intense enough light for growing sunlight demanding plants. Light that stimulates photosynthesis is of a different wavelength balance, and the flux intensity from metal halides is astonishing, looks close to sunlight...

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??
