Towing tandem trailers with fifth wheel

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed three different fifth wheel pickups towing tandem trailers. Is this legal now in CA? Doesn't seem to be a bright idea.

With the bigger stuff, you gotta use fifth wheel--I don't understand what your getting at? We have a tandem axel trailor that we tow traditionally, but doesn't the trailer need to be set up for a fifth wheel? Help me understand...

Well, for what it's worth, I've wondered what a "fifth wheel" is, and what it's used for.

I'm assuming a heavy trailer, with a heavier than average truck, but, iwan's post, and Mandrew's response got me curious.

Help me be a dummy no more . . . . ! :)

"Fifth wheel" refers to a tow hitch that sits inside the truck bed, directly over the rear axel of the truck, instead of in the middle of the rear bumper. When you are towing heavy cargo, the Fifth wheel is the way to go, unless you have 18 wheels ;)

Yup. tandem trailers unusual, if not illegal in CA. Tandem axles are very common of course...

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

You mean I don't know, or I can't understand what someone is trying to say(due to their great diction)?

Seriously, who knows what "2X trailers" means???

Tandem trailers (at lest to me) means two trailers. So, the example is a pickup truck with a fifth-wheel hitch, towing an RV trailer with a car, boat or other trailer attached to the RV.

I always thought one of the advantages of a trailer type RV is that you could disconnect it and roam about with the tow vehicle vs the motor home owners that tow a passenger vehicle to run around in.

We have tandem rigs here in Florida. They are allowed on certain parts of the turnpike - not sure where else. It consists of a semi-tractor pulling 2 smaller trailers, each connnected via a fifth wheel mechanism. I have seen them in other states - I thought California. Anyway, an efficient way to move freight to various areas. Fedex and UPS both use this method.

Yes, we have lots of big rigs with 2 trailers here in CA. They're talking about a personal pick up truck as the tow vehicle, pulling 2 separate trailers.

Years ago my family would go camping with the family of a friend of mine. They had a huge motor home, jeep, and trailer of dirt bikes all linked together. We would travel through Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. I don't think there was a limit to the number of things that could be towed but there was a length limit. I don't recall which state it was, but one had a lower limit and their oldest son would drive the jeep pulling the trailer through that state.

My family had a station wagon, a popup camper, a large tent and bicycles so we didn't have that problem. :)
